Calling Sequence

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good calling sequences? I was also wondering if anyone has tried downloading some of the calls from Varmint Al’s page and tried putting them on a CD and using a CD player with speakers as a caller. I would appreciate any input I can get.

I just got back in from using my varmint al calls and sequences, got to see one coyote but no shot due to the range. Mine are all on mp3 player.

My sequence is to call for maybe 10 seconds, then watch for 4-5 minutes, repeat. I watched one coyote come in from maybe 1/2 mile on the first sequence alone. Shot her at 30 yards without me making another sound. She had me pinpointed. I'll stay on stand for about 20 minutes, longer if it 'feels' right.

I mainly use a Sceery cottontail call,(only thing I don't like about the Sceery is it will freeze up on me in cold temps), but I will also use a jackrabbit call, or an old Weems. Some days they want one more than the other, I let the coyotes decide want they want to hear. I do use different sounds on the same stand occassionally. In another couple of weeks, I will end the stand with a few howls.

Huntersdaddy:

I'm in the process of building one. Bought a anti-skip CD player from Walmart ($12.95) and a Mini Audio Amp ($12.99) from Radio shack. I'm just going to fit them into a small plastic box (keep the water, etc out), then burn some calling sequences on the computer to use in this setup. A cheap way to go and with burning your own CD's you can time the calls, have a waiting period and just loop the CD. (Much like a remote control.) And when you want to change your calling sequence, just put in a different CD. Another guy (right here on PM) hooked a small speaker horn to the mini amp for a bit more directional volume. I'm going to set this up probably with a decoy and sit about 50-75 yards away and see what happens. Hopefully I should be trying this out in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know how it worked out, but I see no reason why it wouldn't.

Made my call from Al's site. using the same MP3 player he suggested. Works great. I downloaded the sounds from him , but haven't used them yet. I converted them over to MP3 using a free download converter from downloads.com. They sound great through the system.

The only coyote I've brought into my stand was with Varmint Al's caller, calls, and sequence. I have made my own sequences with other sounds and brought in bobcats. His caller is plans were really easy to follow. I used a cheap-o CD player instead of the MP3.

with this cheapo call how far up do you set the volume? I'm putting mine together this morning and tanking it out this afternoon maybe this is going to break my streak of seeing nothing. I am using the exact materials as is on the varmint al's website. Thanks

Make sure it's not so loud as to distort the sound. Mark it with a magic marker or such. Then just turn it down below the distortion threshold just a hair. This is plenty enough volume. I'm using the same Radio Shack amp and a CD player, but now that I see MP3 players for around 20-25 dollars I'm thinking of getting one. It would probably work better than the CD player in the cold (below freezing). Guess I'll find out.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mp3s are affected the same as cd players are in the cold, its not so much the device as the batteries freezing. My solution is that I switch batteries on the way to the next stand, keeping one in my pocket to thaw out and one in the caller. The 9 volt in the amp isn't affected by the cold for some reason.

If you do decide to go wit an MP3 player make sure that you have the EQ set on natural, or vocal. Most of the little cheap mp3 players have the eq but is a bit hidden so read your owners manual.

Heres some pictures of my varmint al El cheapo. caller now has a lid clasp and padding on inside to keep stuff from banging around. Also painted in a tan camo.

I like to sit down in a stand, and blow softly for about 30-45 seconds, then wait 4-5 minutes then blow pretty much full
volume for another 30-45 seconds, then another and then call it good. almost all the coyotes i have called this year
have came after the second series, i hope this helps you

savagerookie: I have my cheapo set up the same way and the bullhorn speaker is so quiet the small speaker on the amp is much louder. Do you have any problem with your sound out of the bull horn?

ADD ON: I have just realized that I used stereo headphone jacks instead of mono could this be why my bull horn speaker is so quiet?
