calling to locate quail

Over here in New Mexico I have actually had pretty good success calling quail, but only AFTER we have flushed a covey. Then the birds are all scattered and they want to regroup, so they start calling to each other to covey on up again. I use a Lohman quail call (about 8 bucks) and say "Cha-KIT-oh" when I blow into it. Located a covey of about 20 birds earlier this season after we flushed them and (being the polite hunters that we are) fired several warning shots as they all escaped. When we located them with the call, they were holding tight and I got my first ever triple.

It will work. I have owned various quail calls and have found the bite and blows to work the best, not to mention the easiest to use. The wood generates a gruffer sound while the plastics provide a higher pitch. Primarily be patient, pay attention to how the birds are calling to each other and copy them.

Are these Bobwhite quail you are calling in? I have hunted them in the east and in Texas all my life and have never heard of them being called to locate them.

Interesting information here.

Here in the Washington desert, we have California Valley, Mountain, and Northern Bobwhite Quail. I can get a response after flushing the Valley Quail, but I don't have any experience trying to call the other two species, so I can't say one way or the other. I have a flock of Valley Quail that lives on the property, and others nearby. They call to each other frequently, early in the year. However, it seems their calling each other and response to my calling diminishes as the season goes on. We have owls, hawks, coyotes, kids, dogs, and cats that all pressure the quail. I see them every day but don't hear them calling much. Seems they get more secretive with their vocalization later in the year.

I have called gambels and scaled quail. If you think birds are in the area give your call a couple blows sit a listen for a while. I have found if the quail are in a covey still, they will make some kind of cirping sound it is hard to hear and even harder to explain what the sound sounds like, but once you here it you will get the hang of it. If you have already flushed them out of the covey keep calling until they answer back mix the calling up do like 3 repations one time wait about a minute then do two, or somthing like that. Some times you have to wait a while after you have flushed them for them to settle down before they call back. Some times they will never answer back I guess maybe they are educated just like coyotes get.
