Calling with cover scent

We've already established that yotes will most generally go downwind of the call to help peg where the sound is coming from.

My question is does anyone wear or use a cover scent gland lure/urine to help entice or cover your existing scent. Just like deer hunting, would it hurt to spray a lil urine on my boots?

Hello gunner, that question my mind too, so i did sum checking on what coyotes like to eat, mostly meats, smelly stuff they are attracted too. SOOOOOOOO, my idea of scenting for one or two is this, and what i like to use. go to a resturant ask them for a galloon or two of their old deep frying oil in the back of the resturant. pour sum out sum place. my advice get the oil after there friday night fish fry. oil should smell like fish and meat, real smelly. and pour sum out sum where and see when they show up.i think this should work. sum good old smelly oil.

been covered over and over again. the easiest way to put it is drug dogs sniff out drugs SUBMERGED and SURROUNDED by gas in fuel tanks you think a little pis is gonna hide your scent? most are gonna tell you to use the wind to our advantage and save your money and others are gonna claim it cant hurt. i say save your money. or if its legal in your state set up some sort of bait.

As a trapper I have access to yote urine and all types of skunky call lure or actual coyote gland lure. I wonder if my chances would increase if I were to bring a bottle along and just open it up before each stand?

Im not so much as looking into this to cover my scent but to put out a scent that the dog would be intersted in. Ive caught yotes with traps that Ive set bare handed that I know had my scent on them. My question is what kind of results should I expect if I were to add something that the dog would be attracted to.

i think its kind of obsolete to try atractants other than a bait station. setting up a mister would be i think about the best. but you have to go out and make extra movement setting it up and when the coyote makes it downwind of you or the scent source your own scent will be mixed in with the other smell. guess you should just try some of your trapping scents and document your succes to failure rate on stands with and without the atractant.

FYI, a recent university study of yote scent attractants (can't remember which university) found Chanel No. 5 to be one of the best attractants they tried (no, I'm not kidding).

You might be a coyote hunter if you buy Chanel No. 5, but it's not for your wife or girlfriend.

Edit-the study was done by University of California Davis. Here is a quote:
"We later tested a number of other
scents. Chanel No. 5, Avon “Bravo” aftershave
lotion, putrified deer, lamb fat extract,
several commercial coyote trapping
lures, and a few other odors were as
attractive or more attractive to coyotes
than any coyote urine fraction."

I'm not sure if it's just coincidence or what, but I take a fist size Ball of Ground Beef, in a Zip Lock Freezer bag that's been left out a day or two. Go to my stand, set out the MO-JO, FoxPro and zip lock 30yds down wind, (bag open).
Only thing I can say, is it sure stinks and can be smelt when I get downwind of it retrieving a dead dog down. If I can smell it at 70+ yds, I'm sure they can allot further.

But Hey ~~~

One drop covers the scent of a 200 pound man and all his clothing and gear? That's really good stuff...

Not covers it. Kills it. And the man probably only weighed 185.

But it's still really good stuff! Wanna buy some?

My wife would be mad as he11 if I returned from " hunting" smelling of Chenel # 5. That would be the end of my "hunting" days.

I can hear it now, "The smell, well you see dear coyotes love Chenel, what? Ok I'll get my stuff and leave."

Doggin',
Since I weigh about 200 lbs., should I go the extra mile and put out two drops? Just in case ya know.

Salem,
I read all that stuff about Chanel #5 being an attractant for trapping when it was first released and it was supposed to be an attractant for bobcats, not coyotes. Now imagine explaining to your wife how much the "kitty" likes perfume. Better be very careful in your phrasing!

I have used bacon grease to,seems to work to,all Canines love anything greasy

Keep the wind in your face and try to setup so they can’t back door you. I hunt alone most of the time, if you have another guy you can do the downwind thing. If they can’t smell you you don’t need to play with blockers. Just more things that can go wrong especially with skunk essence.

It's nice to bring some of these older topics up again.

As a trapper I've found that a coyote/fox will dig up a slightly contaminated trap even with tainted bait, coyote/fox urine and skunk scent all around the set. Bird dogs that have been sprayed by skunk will keep right on hunting and finding birds.

Learning to use air currents and terrain to your advantage will make you a better predator hunter than to try and eliminate your scent.

Learning how to downwind hunt, using blocking to keep a pred from scenting you, hunting crosswinds can be very effective(my favorite) are all things that give you an advantage. Learning where your coyote is more than likely to come from is another great advantage. I hunt days and while coyote move about during the day you rarely see them in big open places where I have lived..

Cover scents can be effective.

Mature coyote, deer etc. notice any odor or visual that is out of place for any given environment that they live in. Use of odd ball odors will put predators and prey on high alert and likely a change of course. I was involved with explosive detection dogs along with some narcotics dogs. Commonly would here dog can smell narcotics hidden in a box of tide or gas tank. Because he can smell every individual ingredient in bowl of soup. Not so unless someone has trained the dog to do so.

Auburn U had the most advanced detection dog testing equipment and training allowing measurements down to parts per billion. It was noted that a dog will que in on the most abundant element from a given odor not all. Most odors contain multiple elements.

I like to load area of my call up with cover scent such as Red Fox, Coyote, Raccoon, etc. depending on environment so it is most abundant odor versus the call or myself. It will get the mature coyotes closer to call before backing off or hanging up. I typically put call at least 50 yards out and mist air with cover scent as I go to and from call. You still must pay attention to wind, so you are not the most abundant or out of place odor producer.

The Coyote below was shot less than 5 yards from the the call.

The point is not to fool them completely but confuse them enough to check up just long enough to get a shot at a coyote that would otherwise be gone.
I have seen it in action once. Not enough to make it worth my time or frustration dealing with that smelly stuff.
