Camo for Kansas woods and open country

I am buying new camo and I would like to be able to use it for deer hunting in the woods and predator calling in open country. My hunting partner recommended buying mossy oak brush for open country and another pattern for woods. I was wondering if I could get away with using one pattern for both situations. I live in Kansas, so even the woods aren't very green during hunting seasons. I was thinking maybe Realtree AP HD. It would be expensive for me to buy 2 sets, because I plan on buying Rivers West stuff as I have liked it a lot in the past. Any suggestions?

Hutch, I buy Natgear. Works great. I feel most camo patterns are too dark. And Mossy oak brush is a pattern I can't get used to the looks of. May work great however.

I have had whitetails stand under me during the leafy green bowseason in October while wearing Natgear. I've had 4 deer come within feet of the base of the tree I was in the same morning. I even sprinkled water on the last ones head from 20' up after having already shot one and she looked up and still couldn't see me. It is by far my favorite anywhere any time camo. I even use it in the snow and open pastures as well. I can't tell you how many animals have come close to me without busting me since I started using it.

Is natgear's waterproof stuff as light as Rivers West? The thing I really liked about Rivers West is that its light-weight so I can use it when I deer hunt. I don't hunt deer out of a tree stand, I stalk them so I do a lot of walking and I need something light and quiet.

Hutch,
Shawn is right--I think NatGear is great for our country here in Kansas. Mossy Oak Brush would work also. We hunt a lot of open pastures here in Central Kansas, as well as some wooded creek and river bottoms. Another pattern that intrigues me is Shadow Grass.

Of course, I have called coyotes in and bowhunted deer successfully in a pair of Army surplus OD wool pants and a forest green fleece pullover, so go figure!

Sometimes I think a guy should just get what he looks best in! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'd start with NatGear as it is truly versatile. Then, if you find yourself out in the open fields quite a bit, definitely go with the MO Brush. Also, a pattern which is similar to Brush is MO Duck Blind. Around here, it would work extremely well if you're staying in the corn stubble or brush, but you will get busted with it in the woods.

I like the looks of AP for woodlands, but not sure how it would do in the open. Not saying it wouldn't work. I just have not used it.

hagfan,
That is the stuff. Our local WalMart has started carrying the NatGear camo pattern at a fraction of what I bought mine even before Cabelas had it. There was a local guy here that was a factory rep, and his prices were exactly what the NatGear website had.

In retrospect, I would have waited to buy it on sale at Wally World!

Camo patterns are like novel fishing lures - they're made to catch hunters' and fishermans' $$$.
That said, try to avoid colors that "light up" under a UV light. Watch your movement and the wind.
I usually wear od or gray fatigues and NatGear shirts & jackets, because I like the pattern.

If you are in the open more use MO Brush or MO Duck Blind & Realtree AP is versatile too. All avilable in Rivers West. LAW light weight and H2P heavy.
I have posted pics here before comparing these with digital and Natgear in a number of outdoor vegetation settings including rocks brush, deadwood, evergreens, sage, grass.

I'm in Northeastern Kansas myself and I prefer military camo to the hunter specific camo. Realtree AP brown is pretty good for most of the terrein you find here. I've found that a desert type camo works great for our Fall/Winter. Whether it be in the fields or in the woods.

i use apair of brown bib coveralls and a brown jacket with a brown ski mask in the cold season, been doing that a years, hasnt failed me yet, i also have some realtree all purpose for early season, pants, shirt, mask
