Camo Tape Removal?????

Be sure you do a test on a small spot with any of these suggested substances before you start wiping the whole stock/scope, whatever. Another thing that might work is stuff called "Goo Gone."

I recently removed tape which had been on the rifle 3 years.

1.) Saturate tape with WD-40.
2.) Remove tape.
3.) Moisten residue with WD-40, let soak a few minutes, rub off with an old cotton sock, or something like that.

It took about 2 hours, most of which I spent reloading, while waiting for the WD=40 to soak. The gun looks like new.

Gotta be careful here though, some cleaners will bleach the stock or remove the stock finish as well. I did that to a Remington synthetic stock using carbo cleaner, it was white blotched. Good for snow, but not so pretty the rest of the year! Skin So Soft works very well and doesn't damage the finish. It makes the stock smell kinda, well, femme, so don't let your hunting buddies around till it wears off a bit. Or they accuse you of wearing panty hose or some nonsense. Say, wasn't there a guy who predator hunts who......never mind!

Thanks much for all of the input. I was a bit taken aback when I first removed the tape and saw the muck I had to remove.

I did the WD-40 routine and it worked pretty well. One soaking application to remove the bulk of the goo, a second because the stock still felt sticky to the touch.

I was even able to walk away with a manly-man gearhead sort of essence!

If all else fails, I can guarantee an oxygen rich flame from an oxy-acetylene torch will do the job. Beware of collateral(that's PC talk for throwing out the baby with the bath water) damage.

Hey, this is not about taking sticky camo tape, but I know another way to camo your gun without using sticky tape. I think 3M makes it but what it is is a athlete wrap that clings to itself and not your gun finish. You can find it in a phramacy store or in a farm supply store in horse area it comes in all sorts of colors from white to black but the only problem is that there is no camo type yet. Any when you want to take it off you just roll it back off til next time you need it. I just use the white and brown wraps. Anyway thought this might save you guys some time.

Not to be trite....but refrain from putting that stuff on your rifle in the first place

Ive had the finish pull right off after leaving the tape on for a season, or maybe it was two... at any rate, the camo looks like you know your business, but ain't really needed.

Doggin, that is the good old "vet wrap". The local Farm Store carries only "goofy grape" and some maroon stuff.
Where is Lexington?

Vic, your point is not at all lost on me. I agree. Both the potential finish damage as well as the initial need, or lack thereof.
Boys will be boys, I had to learn this one the hard way...
I didn't worry much about pulling this finish off, it was a dull urethane finish to start with. A D7 couldn't budge it. Ask me about what maskng tape will do to something like the glossy stuff on a Ruger stock... Ugly!

Thanks again for all of the input. Several lessons to be learned here.

Goo Gone is the good stuff. It will take about anything off, like tar, gum, "Sticky stuff from tape". I know it wont hurt a wood stock, but not sure about a synthetic stock, surley it wont hurt it, try a little in a spot where you dont mind it getting messed up, like under the barrel.

JoeF,

Didn't I give you some white vet wrap last year when I came down to hunt? I thought I did but, I could have a brain fade here. If you need some, the local Farm and Fleet store has plenty that I could send you. Up until now, I haven't used any since we've had no snow virtually all season. That's about to change on Weds., hopefully. Big storm maybe...stay tuned.

Terry

JoeF, Lexington is just north/east of Bloomington/Normal about 15 miles along I-55.

TerFisIL thats where I got my 3M vet wrap at the local Farm & Fleet, when I was back visiting my parents in Kewanee. Sure hope we get some of that white stuff like they are calling for because we are heading up to Kewanee for soon and I plan on trying a few sets while I am there.

Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow

Terry, you did leave a sizable roll with me. I gave half to one of my brothers and the other half is .... somewhere!

We'll probably have great snow this weekend and I can't hunt.

Terry, I still owe you an e-mail.

Kewanee sure brings back some fond memories, used to have a roommate from that area and we'd visit there on accassion.

JoeF,

I'll send you more if you want. You'd better e-mail me you addy, I don't think I have it. I know it's "Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere". I'm thinking that we'll need it for the weekend. Talking 6-12 here with some places 13+. That's actually too much but, since we've seen hardly any all season, we'll take what we can get.

Doggin, I work with a guy that lives near Kewanee(Hog Capital of the World, they claim, but I've never been to the bars there) and it's a pretty good area for coyotes. They do have some of the locals that like to run 'em with atvs and snowmobiles, though. I just shake my head at 'em.

I did make a believer out of the coworker last year, though. He didn't think calling would work, well...he does now.

Terry

TerFisIL, Yes it used to be the Hog Capital of the World back in the 50's thur the 80's when they use to run alot of field hogs, but now the hog market has went to the big guys and Henry County doesn't have near as many hogs as they use to. For the crazies that run coyotes with sleds and ATV'S yes we have them around here. Doesn't seem to fair to me or as much of a challenge as calling them in is. This is my first year of actually calling for them, in the past just used to try shooting at them with my bow while out deer hunting. So far I am 1 for 2 as sets go. Have been trying to get some more ground to cover around here instead of calling from the same area. Hopefully can get back to Kewanee this weekend to try some calling back at the farm. Have plenty of ground to cover up there. Who's the guys you and JoeF know from Kewanee area?

JML

Doggin,

JoeF doesn't know this person. He's a co-worker with me at Case-IH in East Moline and he actually lives just outside Cambridge.

I'm not sure, where's Lexington located?

Terry

Blue, thanks for the input, the WD-40 worked wonders.

Terry n' Dog, this hog talk and Kewanee combined with our present weather is causing a few flashbacks here. I passed thruogh that area during the heavy snows of 1978 and 1979. To this day I recall walking out on the top of a barn that had collapsed from the weight of the snow to trickle down a few buckets of shelled corn to the feeder pigs that were trapped underneath.
I also remember a gal from that area that was a member of the U of I synchronized swim team..... Small world, I better shut up on that one!

Hope things aren't too bad where you're at. I think I'm one of the few residences in Adams county that has power, the ice is hideous. I spent a bit of time trapped in an elevator today due to an untimely power failure. I thought I had nerves of steel and was pretty tough, I am no longer so sure....

Terry, thanks for the offer of the tape shipment. I do have a pretty good idea of where mine is at and really can't hunt for another week. The rain/ice is blowing our last night of night hunting. Maybe next year!
