Camo Tape???

What is the verdict on Camo Tape? I don't want to paint my rifle and the tape seems to be the best option.

What do you guys think? Will it case rust over time? Is there a better option?

Thanks

I use it all the time.......no big deal. Put it on, go use the rifle and at the end of the day take it off. It takes me about five-ten minutes to do a nice job with decent tape. If you left it on it may not be a good idea. What I do is put a very thin film of Aero Kroil down on the surface first...where I want tape. Tape doesn't stick that tight to Kroil but it sticks quite well to itself. Makes getting the tape off easy and protects from the elements.

SKB2706 is right about taking it off at the end of the day. I took the finish off my Encore Custom barrel using H.S. tape when I got caught in the rain, and I bleached the A-2 stock on my AR by leaving McNetts "ace wrap" type tape on during the summer in my truck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif. I also have a NEF shotgun with the "removable" paint that won't remove after being left on too long. My next plan is to buy a Duracoat kit and just leave it on forever /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

I use the new Cabelas Snake Skins camo kit. Its basically like heat wrap and it keeps that glue residue crap off that regular gun tape uses. Durable and the detail looks sweet. I have a thread posting my results, will have to dig for it.

I guess I didn't use the Snake Skin heat shrink stuff correctly. Mine shriveled up and looked exactly like a shed snake skin! It was useless to me.

Years ago I bought a product that I think was called " Gun Chapps". It was vinyl and fit over the stock and zipped up, it had a piece for the barrel also. Does anyone know if these are still produced and can you get them for a Savage 12 heavy barrel?

Thanks

Its really hard to get the gummy glue off if you leave it on very long.I never had a problem with rust but im in arizona.

If you use a "Camo Tape" that has the sticky stuff on one side, then you had better remove it quickly or you will leave residue on you gun. I don't know exactly what the "ace wrap" type tape ARCOREY was talking about, but I have used a vet wrap type tape on my Savage 12VLP and after the first winter and spring on the rifle, there was no residue--no harm to the finish, etc. I only wrapped the barrel and most of the scope though. I didn't put any wrap on the stock. I used the same tape again the second year and when I took it off, there was sticky residue on the scope and barrel. It came off with GooGone, but I won't reuse that vet wrap tape. Use it one season and throw it away.

I believe this is the type of wrap that horsemen use on the ankles and legs of their animals. I bought mine at a Shipton store in Billings, MT. I had this photo in another thread, but I'll put it in this one too.

I used Vet wrap on my RRA to hide the stainless barrel and cover the scope. The Savage I bought some cloth and had my girl sew a sleeve for the barrel and then covered the scope with vet wrap. The vet wrap is about $2 a roll at T.S.C.

This is my Ruger M77 .223 with Camo I bought from Sportsman's Wherehouse. Works great, had it on for two years now and no rust. I can never get up enough nerve to paint my rifles! [image]IMG]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p245/PhnxCaller/Camorifle.jpg[/IMG][/image]

I have used the stickey Camo tape for several years now and when I take it off I have used WD 40 and Four Ought steel wool and it comes right off. no rust and the barrels whether shotgun or Rifle . very easy to cleanup. I had it on a Beneli, 12ga and a Mdl. 70 in 257 rob. for over 2 yrs and when I took it all off the Finish was just like it was before I put the tape on and both guns had been wet(rain) several times (back when it rained) ha

The last couple of years I have used camo tape from Cabelas on my shotgun for 2-3 months of ducks and geese, from August to October. It gets wet, I never take the tape off until the ducks leave but I have had no rust (except on un-taped areas) and the residues have been real easy to get rid of. Same goes for the white tape I sometimes put on rifles in winter. Only trouble is that the tape eventually starts to peel at the edges. The camo tape also looses some color.

Nice Shot!
I have used cloth tape on steel, aluminum and wood, none of which has been hard to remove,But it does'nt last long. It's inexpensive and allows you to change color if needed.

Hmmm Several things about the tape that I don't like..

It can from time to time leave a residue. (did it once)

It can cause rust to form after it has been wet. (did it once)

It can remove the finish off of Ruger stocks.. (did it once)

It can retain odor that will affect your hunting. (been there and done that once also)

Those were all on one weapon. Aa ruger 77MKII 300 win mag.. I ruined the finish of the barrel and the stock as well as pitted the bolt handle..

It took all of 5 weeks to do this..

Some can't bring themselves to paint their gun.. Those have to use some other form of camo, like tape or shrink wrap.

Both of which I have tried without success. The tape did the aformentioned things and the Texas sun and summer took the shrink wrap clean off as it shrank below what the size would cover (yes it was applied correctly)

I veiw my guns as tools and I have painted every one of them with the exception of a Remington Sendero in 7mm Rem. Mag (used primarily at night for predators, and the new 11-87 ( it has a matte finish and I don't think I need to camo it as it doesn't stand out)..

Paint, if done right, can actually enhance some guns appearance.. Such as those ugly old remingtons... lol.. Makes tham look better right away.

If you take your time and do it right, the paint will not cause rust as it seals.

The paint will not hold extra odor once it has cured and dried all the way.

It does leave a residue , but that residue is why you put it on in the first place..

As I am sitting here I reach over and pick up a gun that I ahve been using now for 5 years. Summer sun, winter rain and ice, spring time floods and mud.

I have to tell on myself because I have never evn applied a coat of oil to any surface of this gun in all those years.

I stripped this gun and painted it the day I brought it home.. It is a Savage 112 in 223. It holds the same coat of paint that I applied 5 years ago. It has been from Texas to Arizona and killed coyotes every place it has been.

I would paint any of my gunss at any time.

I would not put any camo tape on them unless it was temporary and I had no other choice...

For what it is worth......James L..

btw??? Did I say how much I hate the tape?

I also have had negative experiences with tape, including No-Mar (they must not have done any product testing before naming it).

I ended up having to use bore cleaning solvent, Hoppe's I think, to get the residue off. I tried acetone and rubbing alcohol and all it did was smear the adhesive around.

Now I'm using the "vet-wrap" that sticks to itself. I bought it from Sportsman's and it comes in a couple of camo patterns.

I bought some McNett's tape. It comes in several different patterns include Army ACU.

I think if you leave any tape on long enough it's going to leave marks or cause rust since it will trap moisture.
