I just inherited a scrimshaw walrus tusk and on the end of it is something inscribed in maybe Russian? How would I find out how to translate it?

This is only a guess, but it looks like it might be Greek to me. If you are anywhere near a University, someone in the Classics Department could probably tell you real quick what it is!

Good hunting!

Not anywhere close to a University but I was thinking Russian since they had a strong influence in days gone by with the Alaskan Natives. It's still Greek to me though

I tried 4 of the translate sites online, but it wont work as my keyboard does not type in Russian & I cant cut & paste as its a picture.

Yeah, I tried to use the above translate link and it wanted me to download a toolbar. I tried another one and couldn't get it to do it . Where's a Russkie when you need one ?

Thanks for your effort, I appreciate it.

if real you got some money there. Like stated send the pic to a professor at a university and also find an appraiser. Saw one on Pawn Stars that was faked but the expert said real ones are worth some money.

You can go through the control panel and search "change language". I have never done it so I don't know much about how it works but I'm sure it would be worth a try...

I figured out how to switch the keyboard over by adding another language into your programs.

Prob is I'm afraid to do it as everything wil be in russian I believe, as it will switch all computer input to russian and I wont be able to read it then to change it back!

Edit...

Ok, I got sick of waiting on them and translated it myself from the commie alphabet.

It makes no sense in english either and as near as I can tell it is peoples names.

It IS russian. All the symbols and letters matched to their language.

It reads as follows..

RABOTAL
KOSTERYEREZH
CHUKOTKYE
S.NUNYAMO

The E letter in their alphabet can either be pronounced ye or e and there is no distinction betwen the two. Its either or.

Some of their other letters also have multiple translations to our letters in english.

It appears to me that it is the russian spelling of eskimo names possibly, and why they dont translate well in english.

I would say there are two names there. The first russian and the second one eskimo.

I'm no expert and could be wrong as could be my translation, also.

Regardless, that is a neat piece you got there and I believe it is genuine on all counts, though in saying again, i'm no expert.

Hope this helps?
