Can I make my Stock DPMS AR-15 into a coyote hunting machine

I have a very stock 16'' barrel AR and want to use it for hunting varmints etc. Is it possible with out pouring a ton of money into it? I want to install a scope but not sure about the short barrel. But then I'm only shooting out to a max of 150-200 yards.
Thoughts?

Heck ya it will work, especially at those ranges. I would want a good trigger and maybe a ff tube. Also consider some hearing protection for that short barrel while hunting for sure.

for 200 yds and under, get a 4-12x40 vortex, nikon, leupold for $250 or under, a set of Nikon P223 rings for $50 and then its just a matter of finding a load it likes. start with 55gr vmax, those should get it done.

Any AR is already a Yote killing machine. Just add a scope if it has a rail. I prefer the 1X4 power that Nikon, Bushnell, Millet or one of the others make.

I agree with everything the guys have said. I started hunting coyotes with my 16in M4 style carbine that I used in 3 gun competitions. Along the way I found that the parallax caused by having a carry handle mounted scope was eliminated by going to a flat top upper. I hunted with the 16in flat top for a long time very successfully.

Getting your stands set up right is far harder and more important than the gun you use. What you have right now will work just fine IF you get your stand set up right.

My Bushmaster carbine 16" will shoot pretty much 1" 3-shot groups, give or take a little. That's plenty good enough for coyotes and it has taken a few. Your DPMS will most likely be more than adequate. As already mentioned, add a scope and go hunting.

16” barrel on my service rifle and with that, acog(any 4x would do the same), rubber spacer between upper and lower(eliminates wiggle and cheap!), we’d shoot out to 500 yards. 300 for qualifying. 100yds was 1” groups from prone. Couldn’t imagine how great it’d be with a aftermarket trigger. I made a custom out of a dpms last year. Pretty much a prairie panther with the stock switched to a carbine kit so I could put a better stock on, a new trigger, and something to the BCG. Can’t recall right now. That thing was still holding MOA at 500 yards but I sold it. Heavy and long. My buddies carbine killed just as many so that’s what I’m switching too.

Oh! And most carbines have a fast twist, 68 grain hpbt from black hills or cabelas in that red white and blue box have always been super shooters in any AR I’ve seen shoot em.

My plain Jane Ruger ar556 with a VX2 2-7 loaded with 69gr Sierra TMKs has taken more coyotes out to 300 yards than most other locals "coyote rifles".

ARs make ideal predator rifles right out of the box. Just throw some reliable glass on it!

^^^This x2^^^

My first AR was a bone stock Del-Ton. It had a flat top upper, 20" barrel, and A2 handguard/fsb. All I did was slap a 3-9x40 scope on it and find some ammo that it likes. Keep it simple. Sometimes less is more.

Absolutely.

I'm in the process of doing the same to my Noveske N4. It was my patrol rifle until the admin decided we couldn't use personal rifles any more at work. Mine is a 14.5" barrel with a pinned AAC blackout. I plan to get an Aero Precision mount and a VX-2 2-7x33 or maybe a VX-3i 2.5-8 and use it at night. It's a 7 twist so I'll probably shoot something heavier than the 53 grain vmax I shoot in my model 7. It's already got a Timney 3lb trigger, my only concern will be the fixed front sight post with a scope.

Here's mine, I did remove the surefire light though.

You wont ever notice the front sight post unless your on the lowest power and you try to focus on it.
I have one of the new savage ARs with the front sight post and a vortex pst 1-4 on it with a Laure QD mount.. on 1x you can see it if you want to, if you focus further out it dissapears.
