Can I use large pistol primers in rifle?

Would like to use large pistol primers in a Ruger 44 mag. carbine. Would it be safe? Are they too soft? The reason for wanting to do so is that I have a ton of large pistol primers.

The .44 Mag cartridge is still a pistol round and is routinely fired in the 44 carbines, but mostly with the Large Pistol MAGNUM Primers. Check your reloading manual for primer recommendations. Reduced power loads my not cycle your carbine.

I used them for years in one of the old original Ruger 44 carbines without any problems. I wouldn't recommend them in high pressure rifle cartridges though, they have a softer cup material than rifle primers.

The answer to the title of this post is NO. There are very few exceptions. A 44 mag is a pistol cartridge. It will use pistol primers whether in a rifle or pistol. A 22 hornet can be exchanged and sometimes pistol primers work better than rifle primers. Using Large pistol primers for Rifle Cartridges is a definate no. First off the large pistol primer is thinner than a rifle primer and will not seat flush . Also the pistol primer cups are made of a softer alloy due to most pistol firing springs being lighter than those found in a Rifle. There is a real good possibility of pierced primers if you use them.

Stick with large rifle primers designed for large rifle cartridges.

Not so much what it is fired in as what catridge it is in 44 Mag is a pistol round so pistol primer work just fine. You could have a problem trying to shove a large rifle primer into a pistol case since they have some sligh dimensional differances (I think Rifle primers are a touch taller) You will be fine useing a large pistol primer in the 44 Magnum case although some powders (H110,WW296 Ect.) want a magnum primer to reliably ignite.

The rifle is a Ruger Mod. 96 lever action, so cycling is not a problem. Thanks for the input regarding the mag. primers.
