I just got a female Canaan dog and was wanting to know if anyone here knew anything about the breed? It will be used as a guard dog....thanks!

I work At USP Canaan (federal pennitentiary)! We don't breed hounds though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif. Guys in the area run Croghan hounds.

I live near the Clay Co. KY federal penitentiary, do you know about this prison? I found out more about the Canaan breed and am very pleased with my pup.

I had a canaan or Kelef K'naani when I was a kid, he bit everybody in the neighborhood, Postman, garbageman, meterreaders, everybody. So my dad tood him to live with my gramma in a near bye town. Couple a days later he showed back and reigned terror on anyone who came in our yard for the next 10 years. But he was a great dog.

RIP Teddy Jack.

Thanks Tusk1! They are very territorial and pack oriented. Mine doesn't seem to like anyone but me and does not like other animals at all.

Now don't get me wrong, he was a great dog as long as you lived there. We had a fish pond, like one you see now called a "water feature" and my dad would bring home bass and bream and put them in there for me, Teddy Jack would sit up on the rocks and poach em out. I guess they were also trespassing! haha. They are very smart and very loyal.

I like mine because they don't have to have lots of attention and are such good watchdogs. I've only had mine a 9 days and it won't let anyone but me pet her and even when I let her out sometimes she will sit by herself. She is by herself mostly all days and it will work out fine. And I agree they seem to be very smart, can't wait to start training her.
