why in ky can we not hunt at night? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif you cant use a spot light for anything but coon hunting. anyone name any reasons?

Don't feel bad. How dumb is this........... In Massachusetts we can hunt at night. NO LIGHT, 22 LR only, or shotgun. Dangerous and stupid.

Tried it once on a moonlit night, and I called an animal that looked like a fox running in. Careful aim with the 22 lr, and pop. After a short track in the snow, I found a house cat that responded very aggressively to my Tweety. Collar and all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Never been out at night since. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Because you game department doesn't trust that you won't poach deer. Isn't that about as BS excuse as you've ever heard? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

people round here still shoot deer at night /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gifi never donr it but i know alot of people do it. it makes me mad to /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif dont like people who shoot deer at night not cool /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

we can hunt at night with lights but only rim fire and shot gun and we need writen landowner permission for it. The state is thinking about extending night hunting until I think March because of our "coyote problem" right now the night season ends dec.31st

Same in Kansas. [yeah, I know, Kansas isn't an eastern state. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif]

here in pa we can use lights but they can't be mounted to the gun in anyway or fashion. same here about the poaching of deer. but there biggest concern that they tell us is that they do not like the idea of people using the gun with a mounted light to scan for eyes while looking through the scope. they say the hunter could point a loaded firearm at a person. never seen a man with glowing red eyes. WTH talk about a stupid accusation. I know my gun weighs more then most because it is a combo gun but I do not think that I would want to use it as a serch light. the PPHA is working right now to get the gun mounted light law passed for this season but time is running out.

Keep up the hard work in PA! We are trying to change the night hunting regs here in TN right now. Changing a states mind is a hard thing to do... but it can be done. Look at WV... they changed their law on night hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
The key to getting a states attention is with numbers... if you go to them as Joe Smoe they are going to ignore you. If you go to them as Bla Bla State Predator Hunters with bla bla members... then, they start talking to you more. After going to meeting after meeting and countless hours talking to them they will start to open up more to your ideas. I know... I have been doing it for a couple of years. It takes dedication to the cause... don't get beat down after speaking to them without resolution. It will come... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have been talking with Fish and Wildlife in my state and they said the same thing. They also said they have not considered the use of buckshot (even #4) for the same reason. Yet in the western part of the state you can use a centerfire rifle to hunt coyote and fox? Wouldnt that make a better poaching tool?

Hi Ceider - Actually in Western Massachusetts you are allowed to hunt predators with a centerfire..........but only in the daylight hours. At night its 22lr, or shotgun with no buckshot. And don't forget, NO LIGHT /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The Ma Dept of Fish and Wildlife says it has nothing to do with poaching, its a public safety issue. The law WILL allow for any caliber under .38 in a pistol, which means you can tote a Contender around chambered in 30-06 at night /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

These laws are so old that they were thinking .38 Special. High power pistols to the public weren't even thought of yet.

But you guys out the Eastern end of the state are getting the shaft for sure. No centerfire in the day is hard to take. I'd go the pistol in a rifle caliber route.

Guys,

Check out the Great White North Forum. We did some major changes to the Minnesota light law. For many years we couldn't use lights at all. Starting next Jan 1st we'll be able to use them for foxes and coyotes. We only got shotguns allowed but that too, could change.

I've got a lot of threads started in that forum that kind of outlines what was done to get this law changed. For anyone who is serious, it would be a good place to look for info.

Randy

we have been working on changing a bunch of laws. PA hunters were allowed to use #4 buck for the first time instead of BB. we got the use of a decoy allowed for fox and coyote. we also got the use of electronic decoys and baiting for coyotes only. all of this was made possible by the PPHA.
