Canuck coyote hunting in Plano/Allen TX area

I'm taking a very preliminary look at visiting my bro in law in the Plano/Allen, Texas, area next year and hope to get in some coyote and feral hog hunting while there. What can a Canadian like me expect from such a trip ? Good area nearby ? Local regulations ? Appreciate any advice.

Well I wish I was could be there with my recorder. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would love to have a conversation between a Newfie and a Texan on tape. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can understand about 90% of the east coast jargon "By" and about 10% of that Texas drawl, y'all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

They won't have lobster and dulse, but they will have BBQ and catfish.

And ticks and chiggers and heat from the sun. They won't have those Spring storms that you fellers get. They may have an dust storm or two.

And some of them fellers in Texas is so scary they only let them out to hunt at night!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

They used to have lots of coyotes but guys like Randy Watson and Byron South pretty much decimated the great herds of coyotes that used to roam across the entire state on there yearly migrations. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Actually coyote calling was invented in Texas when one of the old time fur hunters couldn't find a coyote anywhere and he sat down on a rock and began to whine and moan as Texans are sometimes prone to do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Well it didn't take long before a coyote came in to see what was making such a pitiful noise. A passing Canadian suggested that the Texan shoot the coyote for the BBQ and the rest is well....history. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I appreciate your sense of humour, Redfrog. Its practically ... well ... Newfie. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Are you sure you aren't a displaced Newfoundlander ? Most Albertans are, as I'm sure you know. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh, and what would be the best time of year to go to TX ... for coyotes, that is, and BBQ. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I would suggest fall/winter because somtimes it gets a little warm during summer. BBQ is best in the summer though because mass quanities of beer are needed to cope with the slightly elevated temps of the season.BBQ in the winter cuts the beer consumption rate down a little but a good whiskey cuts the horribly chilly winter weather nicely (hunted all last deer season in a long sleve shirt!). Good Hunting!

CV32 I didn't think it showed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif My folks were from Cornerbrook and Deer lake /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

CV, I live in Plano and try to get out a bit. I'll see if I can 'bird-dog' some places for you. I'm usually pretty busy with 2 jobs, so I'm not sure how much help I could be when the time gets here. You may want to talk to Guess-he's about an hour away from Plano/Allen and does some guiding.

My advice would be to come in the cooler months. Not that summer is bad, just hot and lots of bugs!

Meantime, I'll see if I can dust off some of my hunting spots so that there could be some close options for ya.

Oh, and Redfrog-that whining sound was actually gas from the Texican food the guy ate the night before! Ain't no whinin' goin' on in TEXAS!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BBQ isn't a seasonal thing in TX. It's a way of life!

Newfies are still way harder to understand than East Texicans /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Much appreciated, pyledriver. My bro in law isn't much for hunting, so if there are fellow PM hunters who would be interested in making it an outing, that'd be great. Still, I'm aiming for next year.

Kinda figured that. Also not particularly interested in having a rattlesnake crawl up my pants leg. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Like everywhere, I guess, the Fall/Winter is better, but is there a particular time when it might be best ? I'm going to be able to make the trip pretty much whenever I want.

Deer season runs from first Saturday in November to the 1st Sunday in January. I have better luck gaining access to property after the close of deer season. Between Pyledriver, myself and a few others in the area, I bet we could get you in on some decent hunting anywhere from Jan-Mar.
Here's the skinny copied from the Texas Outdoor Annual. I'm guessing the 5 day permit would be the best way to go.

Non-resident General Hunting (Type 105): $300
Valid to hunt any legal bird or animal (including deer). Stamp endorsement requirements apply.
Non-resident Spring Turkey (Type 118): $120. Available after February 1, 2006.
Valid to hunt turkey only during the open spring turkey season. Holders of this license are exempt from the upland game bird stamp endorsement requirements. (Unlawful to possess both this license and a valid Non-Resident General Hunting License.)
Non-resident Special Hunting (Type 107): $125
Valid to hunt: Exotic animals, all legal game birds (except turkeys), all nongame animals, squirrel and javelina (not valid for other game animals, NOT VALID FOR DEER). Stamp endorsement requirements apply.
Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting (Type 157): $45
Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued). Valid to hunt: Exotic animals, all legal game birds (except turkeys), all nongame animals, squirrel and javelina (not valid for other game animals, NOT VALID FOR DEER). Stamp endorsement requirements apply.

I live on the northwest side of Ft. Worth.
It will be very hot and the humidity will be at least as high as the temperatue if not higher.
If you get out and off the beatin path be very very watchful for snakes. We have rattlesnakes here and the more rual you get the more there are. Snakes are just a part of nature down here especially if you SEE THEM FIRST.
Skeeters aren't so bad especially after things start to dry out (when the grass gets crispy)
Chiggers and ticks are plentiful.
Make sure your boots are in good shape because prickly pear will penetrate boots with textile uppers.
Have fun.

Thanks for all the great replies and info. I hope to be able to pick your collective brains again if this trip pans out for me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
