carbon arrows

I am fairly new to archery hunting and recently bought a new bow. I am also looking to switch to carbon arrows. What would be a good, affordable brand of carbon arrow to buy and what size and length should I get (my draw length is 29 inches)? I plan to primarily use it for deer and possibly coyotes. Also, what grain of broadhead would you suggest? Thank you for your feedback.

I've been bowhunting for only two years, but I've take a buck and a doe the first two seasons, too. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is I don't know a whole lot about archery, but what carbon arrows I use are the Carbon Wolverine Hunter rated 50-60 and my bow is set at 60lbs. They're also 29". My draw length is 29½". They are affordable and have worked on targets, deer, squirrels, and a raccoon. The first year hunting I used 125gr Muzzy's as my broadhead. I love those things. I switched to 100gr 3 blade Muzzy's this past season and they did well also. I switched because they shot a bit flatter. Well, I hope I helped some. Good luck,

Matthew.

Arrow selection depends on several things. How many pounds are you pulling first? A quality carbon arrow will run you between $50.00-$100.00 per dozen. (Many pro shops offer 1/2 dozen for 1/2 the price as well) How much do you want to spend for straitness? Arrow price is related to straitness. A quailty arrow starts at .003" strait and gets better from there. examples: Carbon express CX100-400's ($89-$100/dz fletched), goldtip 5575 XT hunters($79/dz fletched), PSE dominator 300's($69-$79/dz), Crabontec cheetah or whitetail 60/75's ($89-$100/dz) These plus several more are all good arrows and really vary only through personal preference. More expensive arrows are usually .001" strait like the Pro series form goldtip and run about $110+/dz. Arrows that are .006" or worse I personally wouldn't shoot. Broadhead size is also related to pounds pulled. 60-70lbs shoot 100 grains. Anything over is a waste of speed, anything less "could" put you under IBO (minimum 5 grains per pound)...Tell me more about your set-up... maybe I could be more specific.

ArizonaArcher, I am shooting a Browning Ambush Bow with a whisker biscuit rest set at 65 pounds. My draw length is actually 29 1/2 inches, not 29. I already have some 100-grain Muzzy broadheads and would prefer to use them with carbon arrows. Since I am on a budget, I would not like to spend over $70-$80 on a dozen arrows. Thanks.

I shoot carbon express arrows i buy the by the half dozen runs me about $40 a half dozen fletched i have never found a need for more than a half dozen with my bow a mathews MQ1 i am drawing 64 lbs and at 28 1/2 inches i shoot the carbon express 400 size with 100 grain Steel force broadheads. extreamly flat shooting only about 5 inch drop from 20-40 yards pushing them at 287 fps. shoots great groups got to be careful not to cut the fletchings though!!! all i shoot are steel force they are a cut on contact head with a 1 1/2 inch cutting diamiter they get the job done. plus they also will resharpen them for life i send them in after each season and they resharpen them all i pay is shipping they are razor sharp. the only problem that i have found with carbon arrows and the steel force heads though is it seems like after about 100 shots or so they carbon actually starts to break down and is not near as stiff as when you first get them i would say that i could go up to a heavier shaft and eliminate this though. but with your weight and set up a 400 weight arrow should work just fine.

The best way to get these right is to go to your local bow shop. They are the best source of information..You may pay a slighty higher fee for arrows, etc...but you'll save yourself countless headaches!

Look for a pro-shop with a range where you can test things out. Mine favorite has no problem with installing something like a different rest and letting me try it to see if it works well for me. If I don't like it, they take it back off and reinstall my old one, or something different.

I shoot Easton ACC's, still have some of the original dozen I bought a few years ago, and I was shooting them weekly.
Killed 4 deer and 3 hogs with the same arrow, they are very stout, but with the aluminum center will bend on you. I stick a Rocket 100 grn. Steelhead on the business end. Great combo if you like mechanicals.

Big Al is right, support your local pro shop. Mine lets me shoot several different arrows/rest combo's till I get it right and find what shoots best. They have a chrony set up too to check speed. Always works out best in the long run to buy from a shop.
