I will be going on a caribou hunt this fall and need to hire an outfitter. Any suggestions or recomendations from hunters who have used outfitters would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Jim

HI, i was stationed up there for 4 yrs until 2006.
NOrthern air trophy outfitters is my recommendation. My friends went out with them and tagged out immediately and that was 5 per (resident). I went out with another to teh mulchatna herd, didnt do well at all. I also went to the dalton highway one year ande killed some nice bulls archery, same herd as Northern air hunts. the thing is u might be behind the power curve, they book up early, but if if ar ready to pay in full and sign a contract im sure they will fit u in. They operate outta Kotzebue.
If not this is what i recommend.
1. Hunt only the Western arctic herd, its the largest herd and growing.
2. DO NOT hnt the Mulchatna herd. It will be tempting because the outfitters out of Anchorage hunt that herd, its been on the decline for a while and bulls are scarce and its still over hunted. I personally sspent 9 days out there, killed a nice bear and seen as many bears as caribou. not good.
3. Just google alaska outfitters , western arctic herd and do ur homework
4 Do drop hunt, its chepaer and allot of these guys will outfit u with gear if need be for additional cost. No need for a guide for bous.
5. Dont know of your experience up there but its worth whatever, and bous are perfect for the first AK hunt Good luck. Ill be happy to answer any Qs,just private message me.

6. Get a wof TAG!

I went in 03 and had a great time. the outfitter was leaf river. www.leafriverlodge.com i stayed and hunted out of wale river arbic camp taged out first day saw over 1,000 caribou you can get two caribou great hunt im hoping to go back soon. good luck with your hunt.
