Carlson's Coyote Choke

(decided to post here too, the gun forum seems to be mostly rifle talk)

Has anyone used this choke before? Not the Dead Coyote one, just the ported coyote choke. http://www.basspro.com/Carlsons-Coyote-Choke-Tubes/product/94900/-1339379

If so, how did it pattern 4B? I bought one (probably should have asked FIRST, but oh well) and was wondering if its worth taking out to pattern (long drive). If you guys have ever used it and say its crap I wont be in a big hurry to pattern it, I'm getting a good pattern with the factory full, but wanted a little extra.

I did a search here, and all I could find was info on the dead coyote choke..

Thanks for any info!

My Dead Coyote turned out to be too tight for my gun. There is no good answer. You have to pattern it and see how it works.
Getting a good shotgun setup has proven to be more work than a good rifle setup for me. If your're lucky it will be spot on. If not, back to the drawing board.

I am not home right now, and the exact choke tube that I purchased I honestly cant recall the name of it. I beleive it has a constriction of .670 or .675. Anyway, it patterns #4 buck AWESOME at 60 yrds. I will double check it when I get home. It was about half the price of a Carlsons.

From what I understand, the Dead Coyote choke was cut to two different diameters, one at .660" and the other .680". If you had received the .660", I HEARD that Carlson's would exchange it for a 0.680" for free if you mailed it to them.

I personally use a 0.680" Carlson's Dead Coyote choke with the Bismuth T shot from Carlson's, the Dead Coyote shot. I've also used it with #4's. Fantastic patterns, and great knock down power. Really extends the range of my shotty.

I wonder what the difference is between the two? This one is ported, so I'm wondering if that is the only difference.... hmmm

I guess I'll have to mic the inside and see what diameter it is.

Carlson makes a very good quality choke tube. It is a shame that they failed to realize that shotguns of various brands and models have different nominal bore diameters. The result has been that there tubes turn out either too tight or not tight enough. Sometimes a customer gets lucky, and the tube he gets is correct constriction for his particular shotgun.

This... plus the claims of 70 yard effective patterns is a turn off. 30" circles? Heck of a coyote to have a 30" vital area.

Carlson's original choke tube was intended for Hevi-shot "Dead Coyote", which at that time was size "T". Carlson's choke was also dubbed "Dead Coyote".

I finally got home to check that choke tube. It is an HS Strut Strut Stopper. Its diameter is .675. If I recall correctly, I gave approx. $28 including taxes and shipping. IMO, it provides excellent peformance at an affordable price.

Why won't the choke tube of one manufacturer which is the same constriction as the choke tube of another manufacturer pattern the same? They are both the same size and round.

Do you mean truglo strut stopper? or gobbler stopper xtreme? I dont see one by hs strut.

Looks like the Rem choke one is .665 constriction, honestly I'm not sure I would feel comfortable shooting a choke that tight that is not made for big shot.

If both tubes are extended models they should. I have a notion that porting helps throw better patterns, but I am not completely certain. I am pretty dang sure that an extended model shoots better patterns than a flush with front of barrel model though. The point that most shooters miss is that 12 gauge shotguns do not all have bores of equal inside diameter. It is very important to know the nominal bore diameter of your shotgun before buying a choke tube for it.

Correction it is an UNDERTAKER! Sorry for the confussion. As you see, it stays screwed in to the barrel most of the time!

It's not that simple. Sure they are both round and share the same exit diameter, however the skirt design, the length of and design of the parallel section, if the choke strips the wad and if so by what method does the choke retard the wad, there are many factors that distinguish one manufacturers product from another when discussing extended after market chokes. Any and all of that affect individual shot shells construction and influence overall pattern performance. Shotgun barrels and chokes and how they relate to various shot loads are not at all simple and in fact can be quite complex.
