Carry holsters

I am going to start carrying my Sig 228. I can work the gun great have been shooting a 226 for awhile and use it in IDPA. But I don't know what kind or brand of holster to get. I am a big guy 6'2" 310lbs. Thanks for any help

I think it depends on how you want to carry. There are so many options out there you will have to narrow it down.

I am waiting on a Maxtuck IWB holster from White Hat holsters. They are like a Crossbreed holster but have many more options. You can order replacement kydex sheath's for different guns for 20 bucks instead of another 100 for a whole new holster.

They have a ton of good reviews.

I've bought a few real nice holsters from The Holster Store. They are almost identical to my Don Hume holsters, for about half the price, and I never had to wait 6+ weeks for them.

I just ordered a DeSantis from Optics Planet...They had quite a selection and potential two day delivery...

As stated, a lot depends on how you want to carry it and for what average length of time..The key to a comfortable and secure holster is really your belt...Don't scrimp there..even the best holster will get uncomfortable with a cheaply made belt...

For years I was a Milt Sparks fan and have two of his..The wait time has gotten to be pretty long though...

There are a lot of quality holsters on the market, just do some research on the comments of those that own them...I give more weight to the average joe review than the professional writers..

Look up Caldwell GunLeather.I have had one of his holsters for a couple of years and it is a fine holster.Good leather and formed right.Nice guy to deal with and priced reasonable.I feel sure you would like the holster, but give him a call and talk to him.The last I knew he was still working as an officer but he was good to work with and would call back.I don't give endorsements much but he makes the best holster I have and I have, like most people two big drawers full.

Ok thanks guys. I don't know how I want to carry the gun because I never have carried one. Not trying to be a smart alleck just saying. I don't know which way is the best. I will look into the ones you have mentioned. And I plan to get a belt with it. I want a good sturdy belt for it.

I have gone through a whole mess of holsters finding one I like. Now I use a Desantis owb high carry. I went iwb at first, but it just wasn't as comfortable for me with everyday carry. I tried a small of the back Desantis which I liked, but it all depends on what I'm doing and wearing.

Now that it is summer I will end up using a iwb more as it is easier to conceal with lighter clothes.

Definitely try them on with your gun and clothes you will typically be wearing and if you have some folks that can let you borrow a few for a few days it will help you narrow down what you like and don't like.

Caldwell has some holsters on E-Bay right now if you want to look and check/compare prices.I think having tried several holsters that the easiest all round is a good owb on a good belt if clothing allows, next is a Good inside waist. The other options are great for some times, not so great for others.I have wasted to much money over the years on holsters.

I have owb.His inside looks like it would be good. His holsters are made for working I would say. They are thick leather molded for a tight fit when new. They are stiff I guess you would say. They hold their shape and when you want to reholster it is open and can be done one hand easy.I like them a lot.
But other people might not like them as much I don't know. But for me it has all the good things. The only thing I would get different is maybe lined if I was wanting to carry a fancy pistol. It seems with this holster and a good 5.11 belt your pistol dont tug on you all the time or flop around and you dont have to chinch your belt up to hold it.Mine is for a full size 1911 steel frame.

The adams leather holsters look absolutly beautiful!! Got me drooling a little.

Anyone use Caldwell's belts, seems like they are priced really good, like his holsters.

There are many good and some excellent holsters. Most of mine now are from folks like Sparks, Kramer, Taurisano, RafterS, El Paso Saddlery, Simply Rugged (all excellent), with a few Galco, Safariland, Blade Tech, and Bianchi factory rigs to round them out (very good).

For belts when in casual or outdoors I really like the Wilderness Frequent Flyer or Instructor belts. The five stitch models are super hunting or work/casual jeans belts. For leather I think "The Beltman" is hard to beat. The Beltman belts are top grade materials and craftsmanship, the wait time is reasonable and the price isn't staggering. I prefer the seven hole option on a horsehide belt.

Mr Peters, aka The Beltman, passed away a few months ago, and his business has folded up AFAIK. I'm wearing one of his belts right now, and wish I could get another. My youngest son is still trying to get a refund for a belt that he had on order.

Dang! I did not know that. Hate to hear it...

If you're going to wear it on your waist, get a Wilderness Instructor belt and don't look back. If you think you might want to carry IWB, check out Kholster. They make leather/kydex holsters similar to other big makers, but the cost is very reasonable for someone just starting out. I got one a few years ago "to see if I like it" and still use it routinely. Not bad for thirty bucks.
