“We see a lot of Hispanics here when there is no work, no sawmill jobs, no grapes, no vineyards, and not much logging,” he said. “They’re all here taking orders to grow marijuana, and a lot of it’s happening on tribal lands.”He estimates that up to 80 percent of the illegal marijuana in Mendocino County is grown on the valley floor—most of it on tribal lands—based on aerial surveillance and satellite imagery revealing a vast network of illegal grow operations.
Mexican Cartels
Kendall first encountered Mexican cartels in his county in the mid-1990s.
“I got shot at right over there in a Mexican grow,” he said, pointing to a footpath through the brush.

“A guy pops out of a tent with a 12-gauge and I’m screaming at him in English and Spanish, ‘Drop it or I’m going to drop you!’ and he takes off running and gets a round off at me over his shoulder.”

I attended some training with a Navajo tribal police officer back in 2001. He lived and worked on the reservation in the Four Corners region. They have Cartel planes loaded with dope land on makeshift air strips in the remote areas of the reservation and deliver drugs to waiting trucks, ready to haul them out and distribute those drugs for selling. This guy and a partner tried to intercept one of those planes as it landed and came under heavy fire from on the ground cartel members waiting for the plane. His partner was killed, and he was wounded before he could escape.

Biggest mistake US made - tribal lands. Full of alkys, druggies, gambling and MJ grow spots. There is NO Indian Heritage in the US other than the fake tourist stuff.

Back in the mid '70s, I had a deer lease in deep S Tx brush country. Lots of large and small ranches, only two small "communities" (one gas station or country store type) within 70 miles. Known area for drug traffickers, one nearby small ranch (with very nice hacienda) had been confiscated along with an 18 wheel tanker truck which allegedly had been used to haul drugs during that time.
One morning before daylight I was opening the door to my 15' blind when I heard what sounded like a single engine plane rev up, and then a considerable amount of gunfire, probably less than a mile away, but hard to determine on a still night. The gunfire was obviously from several weapons, I'd guess both handguns and rifles. I stood on the ladder outside the blind, watching and listening to see if I could see where the plane was. Based on sound alone, the plane made it airborne, but was blacked out, as I never saw it. Figured it was either a drug bust or a deal that went bad......never heard anything about it on the news.
Lots of remote areas where I'm sure illicit activity takes place all around the country.
