Case Trimmers

Ok so I need a case trimmer for the .204. I know lee does not make one so I have looked at the RCBS ones on Cabelas web site. Now they have a listing for a 3 way trimmer for $50 and then the trimmer with the standard blade. Should I get both? Is the 3 in one trimmer worth the money for those of you that have used it?

What other options might I explore for a trimming tool for my .204? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I dislike the rcbs trimmer---alot. I really don't like the shell plate way of holding the brass. I much perfer the forester or the lyman. If you buy the forester let me know I've got a extra 20 cal pilot you can have. I hope this helps Denny

If you're going to shoot a lot the 3-way cutter is handy. It chamfers and deburs the case mouth while trimming.

Carl,
I have an old RCBS trimmer. It's just a square cutter on the end. Once TTL I have to deburr BOTH the inside and outside of each case. It's a little time consuming. I'd certainly look into the 3-way cutter ones.

The three way cutter is an attachmnet to the case trimmer, not a trimmer itself. be aware that to use the three way cutter you will need a case trimmer I find the RCBS trimmer to be excellent I have used Lyman and forister in the past. I like the RCBS a lot better than either of the others. Yes you need an extra shell plate/holder, I just put mine in the die box with the dies , shell holder, and bullet puller collet. That way every thing for that chambering is togeather.

i use a redding trimmer..
i'm also a new 17 reloader.

i purchased a 17 cal pilot..as i snug the case mouth to the cutter it doesn't look right..it's because the standard cutter is for .22 cal & up to .30

i can't comment on the rcbs cutter,i do notice that redding/forster/wilson offer a cutter for .17/20 caliber.

i imagine there's a reason for that,i haven't trimmed brass yet,"however" i'll be ordering a .17/20 cutter soon.

Thanks for all the info fellas.

Denny thanks for the offer on the extra .20 cal pilot. I will look into the other brands and make a decision.

pcammo,
I do not shoot 500 rounds a weekend. But on occasion I will shoot 100 rounds over a weekend. I usually do not shoot but 700-800 rounds per year through several rifles. 300-400 of those will be out of the .204.

You might want to look at the Hornady trimmer, I have used one for several years and it works good. The 17 cutter/trimmer is needed because the blades on the regular cutter will not reach in far enough to trim 17 cases.

I have been comparing all the different brands and i think the hornady one appeals to me most. Has anyone else ever used one or have any experience with them?

They look pretty good and all the reviews I could find were good ones.

Do either of you 2 fellas using them now have .204's? Does the .17 guide have to much play in it? I just wondered if there was play in it how it might affect the case being square after trimming.

I have a 204 and use the standard trimmer with a 204 pilot, this is the way you want to go. The standard trimmer will come with the trimmer and you install the 17 trimmer/cutter just like a pilot.

I use both the L.E. Wilson and the Forster. Both have their good and bad features but both work very well. If you get the Wilson spend the few extra bucks and get the stand for it from Sinclair, it's well worth the money.
