case tumbler

Do you size the brass first and then tumble it? Thought that would get the case lube off. Can you use the stainless media in the Frankford tumbler? I only reload .223 and don't want to spend $200.00 on a tumbler.

I tumble before I size to get all the powder off and make it so I do not have to gunk up die sizing die. I then tumble after that to remove the lube and make em shiny.

As for the Frankford if it can handle the weight of the steel media is the question you want to ask yourself. The vibratory type tumblers will not be able to stand the weight. That is why you need to get a rotary tumble.

Thanks, I don't know nothing about these tumblers and been cleaning brass by hand and am tired of doing it that way. I believe it was a Thumblers Tumbler so is that the only one that can handle the stainless media? Do they make a smaller size one as I only reload about 100 .223 cases a year?

Heck if youre only doing 100 a year I would just use a white vinegar, dish soap, HOT water mixture in a jug and shake.

I did it this way before I got my tumbler and it worked really well. It was just a little time consuming for doing the 250ish a month that I was loading....

I neck size my bolt rifle cases, I full length resize a couple of different rifle cases too. I always resize and deprime (same die) all of my brass first, then I toss it in the tumbler. Your thinking is right on the money about the tumbling process removing any sizing lube...it does.
I am not qualified to comment on the stainless media, however what I have been reading indicates that you probably should use a rotary tumbler with it...vibratory hasnt been coming up much on any of the pages I have been reading on it.

One other thing. With that tumbler I sent you the link to...I am still going on my first container of Lyman corn cob media...just use the dryer sheets, they help a lot.

Thanks for the replys. I am deciding between the Frankford Kit from MidwayUSA and the one BIGKEV sent me a link to.

i ordered the Frankford kit because it comes with the seperator and the corn cob media. What ratio of cases and media have you found to work the best?

i put all the media that came with mine and i have been known to fill it way up. i can usually get 200+ cases of 223 in it with no problem. i have noticed that when you add the cleaner that comes with it make sure you let it tumble with the lid off for a good 10-15 mins because if you add the brass and the polish at the same time it plugs the primer pockets.
