Wanting to load some 240gr hard cast bullet for my super blackhack (44mag) what speed should I maintain to avoid leading without gas checks.

Danny, About 1000 to 1200fps if the bullets are hard cast. They should not lead your barrel, and should be very accurate!

One thing that will help with keeping the barrel from leading is to use a bullet big enough. The biggest problem that a lot of people do is to use a bullet the same diameter as the jacket stuff that can cause a lot of problems. The best thing to do is to slug your barrel and the chamber throats of the cylinder to see just what you have and them size or buy bullets to fit. The bullets should just slide through the chambers with a tiny bit of finger pressure and if they are .001 to .003 over bore size that is just about perfect. Use a slow burning powder too.

I have slugged the barrel and this is what I have.
groove dia. .418
bore dia. .430
The bullets I have are .429 which takes very little pressure(no force) to put the through to put the bullet through the cylinder,to get them out the same way they went in I can just shake it once and they come out. Hope ya understand what I mean.

Best was to avoid lead issues is to avoid those silly bevel base bullets. They create gas cutting issues that are confused with leading. Leading is the lenth of the barrel. Gas cutting is the first few inches of the bbl. Most commercial bullets are cast to hard, yet still lead (Gas Cut).

I have always had best results sizing cast bullets at least .001" over bore size. The lube is very important also, some are much better than others.

Even though the box is labeled .429 the bullets measure .431 which is good. With just a bit of pressure they go into the cylinder throat. These are flat base and labeled hard cast.

Those .431's outta be great in your bbl. I love the economical aspect of cast, but my 44 is ported, not so cast friendly. But it love 270 gr Gold Dot (Deep Curl) bullets from speer. A hefty dose of h110/Win296 and HOLD ON!!
