Castration Bands

I was told that castration bands use to come in the color Orange. All I can find are Green ones. I have googled them, called and visited different stores but to no avail. Does anyone know where I can find some Orange ones? I thought you guys out west may have a source........Tim

I've seen some guys just use plain O rings which would be black and I think I've seen some yellow O rings maybe. The only drawback being O rings wouldn't be as strong but I've seen it done and it seems to work. Actually o-rings tend to be stronger but not as forgiving to being sized to the mouthpiece. They just don't have as much stretch. They also don't leave that rubber taste and smell on your call!

If you want colored o-rings look to an air conditioning supply. I'm telling my secrets now... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

They come in many colors including tan, yellow, red, dark green, light green, black, orange and more. Ask for "AC O-rings". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I edited this to remove: "Nitrile" for better clarity and accuracy. Nikonut

That's what I meant when I said strong they don't have as much stretch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif You gotta go by what I mean instead of what I say!! RC /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I understood what you were saying Rock, just wanted to be sure everyone else did! LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

A properly sized nitrile o-ring has lots of holding power, too. They have a slick look that accents many toneboards as well!

Does the nitrile last longer than rubber? I have quite a few custom calls that the black rubber o-ring has dry rotted, cracked, and fell off. That's why I've always stuck with castration bands.

Yes they did come in orange! If you find them PLEASE let me know... I have been looking for orange ones for almost a year! I remember seeing them on our farm back in the 80s... I fear they are from a company that no longer exist. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It seems like everyone is wanting some of these. I wish I could make them. If I ever find them I will definately let everyone know. Thanks Tim

If the black bands you have cracked or dry rotted, they could have been high content nitrile or rubber based. Castration bands will also crack and dry rot if exposed to high temps and sunlight. Generally nitrile will last almost as long or longer than real rubber and given that rubber seals are almost nonexistant now it's hard to tell what you might have had.

Air conditioning o-rings are generally neoprene, cloroprene, low nitrile or silicone filled synthetic elastomers. These bands are made for industrial solvents, hydraulic oils, and freon, etc and are much more resistant to weathering. The silicone elastomer o-rings are even more resistant to weathering but don't have as much stretch or scuff resistance. They will all usually last a very long time unless left in direct sunlight or high temperatures for extended periods! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

About as clear as mud isn't it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just keep a few spares and you will be good to go! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
