CF at the OK Corral

Last weekend I checked out one farm field that was planted all in corn this year rather than the regular strips of corn & beans, so I figured the chance to hunt was gone until harvest. Well, hell's bells, the corn had been chopped in strips & already planted in rye.

The next night the wind was favorable, so I drove down the lane & hid the truck next to the standing corn, & walked in 75 yards & set up facing west. Little breeze from my left out of the south, so I set the caller in a little strip of grass up & to the left 80 yards out.

Let out a few howls, then into the bunny blues. Just then, a truck comes down the lane, & stops at my truck. WTF....I get up & start walking towards them, but then it slowly continues down the lane. I stop & watch it go, then it stops, & backs up again towards my truck again, & stops. I make it to the truck & ask if I could help them. He said he owns the property down the lane to the right. I said I'm not on your property, & I'm trying to call in a coyote. Tough to do with all the commotion. We chatted for 15 minutes & got things smoothed over, & he left.

So I was ready to quit & move on, but decided, "what the hay", lets start over, so I did.

Another 15 minutes in & I had one start howling back, of all places behind me in the open field with my truck in full view. I howled back, & he went silent. Another 15 minutes go by & I figure the jig was up. Just thinking about leaving, & I spotted him above me about 2 rows in the corn heading west. He kept coming in & out of view & never stopping for a shot. I was so intent on trying to find him, I didn't see him exit the corn into the open field way out in front of me. I saw him at the last second before getting into the lower strip of corn.

I quickly switched the caller to a light squeaker sound, but figured the jig was up again at this point. A couple minutes in, oh shit, there he is. He stops, I shoot, down he goes. He flops around a bit, so I shoot him again. More flopping, I shoot him again.

After a couple minutes, I go down to drag him out of sight, As I get close, I saw him blink. What??? I got almost to him, & he got up & tried to run away, but only made it a couple yards due to 1 front & 1 rear leg almost blown off.

I went back up the hill to get my gun, came back down, & shot him 3 more times. Back up the set to to gather up my stuff, then back down to him with my drag rope to get him out of the field. No gun & he's still breathing. How can this be???

Back to my set, gather everything up, and go to the truck to put everything away. I was going to just leave, but felt bad leaving him to suffer. So I go back to him & he has finally expired.

I went home......

2-3 years ago I bought a Taurus T-22 & a red dot to use at night for just this type of occasion.

I got lazy, & didn't want to carry it, it's been in my pack since.....

Quite a story Al--I have come across a couple of those 'bionic' coyotes myself but never went back to the set.
Always found something close to finish the job (once it was my foot) but it was ugly. I see you also have the "can't hit the record button" ailment :giggle:.

Mike, I was, as a hunter, disappointed in not making a clean kill, and have been questioning whether I even wanted to post it or not. We all know things can go sideways sometimes, but this seemed to be over the top. 1st shot I got the kerthump of the bullet, did a quick scan to see if anything else was out here, came back to him & he was flopping around, another kerthump, more flopping, another kerthump, & I thought it was over.

It bothered me enough that I went and checked zero the next day. It was 1 1/2" low & 3/4" left at 100 yards. My normal 200 zero is around .6" high at 100. Not enough to blame it on the gun, as he was under 100 yards.

No need to hit the record button, as I thought I had the video on recoil activated, but didn't, so no video to critique the 1st shot, unfortunately. He was well ventilated after the CF ended.

Wow!… That’s pretty crazy, but shit happens. I know the scenario. To end last season the last coyote I killed was a 5 shot volley with 3 connecting before it was down! Not a great feeling for sure, but we’re only human. May not have been pretty but you got it done. Congrats for that!

Yea Al, those vids can be a real eye opener on what actually happened or where the xhair was and what we thought we saw. I am really pissed when I don't hit record and don't kill.
After I started recording and seeing what really happens, I started and still do a whole lot of shooting off my tripod and a stool with a 22. Kills to misses/bad hits ratio improved dramatically.
I enjoyed the story and glad you posted it!

Good show, Mike. Never had night vision but first time I watched a NV video posted, realized the value of those recordings as a training aid to better marksmanship. Much like shooting smallbore competition is great shortcut in figuring out your shooting errors and improving HP scores....less recoil allows you to see your mistakes which are masked by the recoil of HP rifle.

Can't claim your bullet hit a bug anymore with those videos; sure keeps a fellow honest, don't they?🤣

That story made me chuckle a bit ! Experience we gain from numerous hours of just being out there ! We should never assume we have a kill shot without the follow up of checking up close even if need to check the next day !
Well done Alf 👍🏼👍🏼 !
