CF cards for 5th gen IPods

Why bother to hack a hard-drive iPod to use CF, considering Apple has been making flash-based Nanos that are really slim and tiny for several years now? This would be my question. (I've had one for almost 3 years as the brains of my homebuilt caller, and it works really well, Prior, I used a Ripflash Plus that had internal flash memory and a removable SMC flash card slot.)

HDD iPods are molded together and from what I read on hardware hack sites, they're not entirely trivial to take apart and modify due both to this and the complexity and fragility of the internal connectors.

$25 for the adapter, perhaps another $25 for a CF card, and the cost of the iPod (and maybe a new rechargeable battery while you've got it apart)-- unless some part of this is free, you likely could have bought a nice used first or second generation Nano instead, I'd think?

Or, is there some accessory device you'd like to use with a clsssic iPod with that doesn't work with more recent flash one? (a preamp, for instance, to make it a field recorder?)
