CFE BLK vs Aa1680

Anyone done head to head comparisons between these 2 powders? I ve compared them in 17 Hornet and at published max loads the BLK gave about 200 fps more velocity with both 20 and 25 grain bullets. Also, the extreme velocity spreads were way better with BLK... like 100-150 fps vs 50 fps !!

Just curious what others have experienced if they ve compared in small capacity cases.

That's of interest to me because I am debating which one to try in my American 30 upper, they are both in the right range. cfe black it is...

I really like the AA1680 in my .17 Hornet. I made some amazing kills (over 350 yards) on some ground squirrels with that powder and some no longer made (alas!) 20 grain Bergers. But about a year ago I settled on 12.5 grains of CFE BLK as it give me super accuracy and over 3600 fps when using 20 grain bullets. A shooting companion and fellow PM contributor uses the same load with equally fine results.

Russ, I shot 12.5 grs with BLK and got 3650 on chronograph with 20 gr bullet. 11.2 of AA1680 got 3450 fps. With 25 grain bullets got 3250 with 11.5 grs of BLK while 9.8 grs of aa1680 gave 3000 fps or there snouts.

More important to me than the extra velocity is the extreme velocity spreads and BLK was way better in that regard too.

Reason for starting thread was to see if others had similar experiences.

Hodgdon calls it CFE BLK with BLK standing for Black... CFE stands for Copper Foul Eraser.

I think the BLK designation was to point towards 300 Blackout. It s also rated as a good Hornet powder. Really designed for small cases.

Yep, right you are! 12.5 grains of CFE BLK gives me tiny groups and good speeds with a 20 grain Vmax. I've had no need to look any further.

12.6 grains in mine with the 20 gr Vmax shoots real small groups.
