Challenge Howls

I don't use them alot, but definitely if the situation plays out in that way. Lets say a coyote starts howling at you after you played the rabbit, letting you know that you better get lost and stop stealing my food! If that coyote doesn't come in to kick your [beeep], a challenge howl would likely get him unstuck.

I just threw it out one day after an interrogation howl and it got one to poke its head out and ive been using it pretty often ever since. They dont come in hard but it seems like the only way i can get them to show face. Either my coyotes arent very vocal or im not doing something right but ive never had one howl back or make any vocals at all while calling.

The Foxpro Male Challenge 4 sound works great around here at times. Most of the Male Coyotes around here sound just like Foxpro's Male Challenge 4 sound when they challenge whatever sound I am playing.

I have my #4 pre-set button set up with the Male Coyote Challenge 4 sound on full volume. When I challenge the male coyote right back it really ticks them off.

At this time of the year 3 or 4 times at the very end of my stands I have played the Male Coyote Challenge 4 sound for about 20 seconds and got an immediate response right back and ended up killing those coyotes. At the very end of your stand it doesn't hurt anything to throw a challenge out there just to see if you will get a response back.

I’m going to give this technique a try over here. I’ve only had success in one situation where I called in a smaller male with jackrabbit and heard another big male off 100 yards to the left. Started challenging and he got closer and closer until he came up over the hill ticked off but ended up coming with me too.

I use challenges whenever I have one that has howled back but not come in to other sounds. Using handcalls I try to mimic whatever sound he does then shut up for 2 minutes to get him wondering what's going on. If this doesn't work and I can still hear him challenging I will stalk closer and try again.

None of the land I hunt is big enough for stalking. Mostly hunting creeks on the edges of cattle fields so a look is really the best thing I can hope for. I’ve only had two ever come out of the woods to the call even then they stayed 50yds out from it. I would assume I’m hunting educated/pressured coyotes but now the bobcats are a different story.

This time of year, challenge howls can be hit or miss. Now, give it a couple of weeks, during heavy breeding and pup season, and watch out! Better be ready because challenges can be very good.
