I have always ran A2 stocks on my AR's. I am wanting to switch one to a collapsible type. It is not a carbine though, I run 20" barrels. What do I need to swap over. I thought most were set up for carbines with the small buffer tube?

you would need a stock, carbine adjustable buffer tube, carbine buffer spring, carbine buffer. there are several carbine stock kits out there that come with everything you need.

like this kit http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Mil_Spec_6_position_Stock_Hardware_Kit_AR15_p/jb-milspeckit.htm

also you need to make sure you buy matching parts there are 2 types of buffer tubes and stock, mil spec and commercial so when buying the buffer tube and stocks you need to make sure they are the same.

What is the difference other than length of a carbine buffer and a stock/full size buffer? Is it the same weight just Shorter?

There are some differences between makers, but - a rifle buffer is approx. 5 1/4 inches and 5.5 ounces give or take. A carbine buffer is approx. 2 1/2 inches and 3.8 ounces. You can run your 20" upper with a carbine system. The dwell timing on the 20" upper is safe and reliable with carbine buffer.

As was stated above, save some hassle and buy a kit with the buffer, spring, tube and stock.

You could also try an A1 length stock on your rifle. Its about 3/8" shorter than an A2.

Good luck.
