Chassis Rifle Search -- Tikka TSR-1 .260 Remington ?? - Range Report on the Tikka Build

Hey guys......Most of my hunting is night hunting hogs with thermal scopes and ARs. I run 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel and 300BLK.

I have been wanting a day rifle and I like the AR profile so I have been on the hunt for a chassis built 6.5 Creedmoor. I have tried the Savage 10BA Stealth and almost went with the Ruger Precision Rifle but got interested in a Tikka.

My plan was to get a Tikka T3X Compact Tactical Rifle CTR in 6.5 Creedmoor and mount it in a LSS chasis from MDT.

While searching for the T3X I ran across the Tikka TSR-1. It looks like it will be a nice setup and I decided to give it a try. They are hard to find so I had to buy it sight unseen and when I get the TRS-1 I in will check it out and if I don't like it I will just box it back up and sell it and try the T3X project.

My main concern is the rifle is in .260 caliber and I just don't see much about it. The .260 and the 6.5 are supposed to be very similar rounds but if anybody can offer any advice I'm all ears. I realize ammo will be more expensive but once I find what it likes I won't be shooting that much.

This will be the only bolt gun I will own and I will use it for daytime hogs in open fields when I catch them out of cover. I get plenty of close up stalking in at night and my main goal is to have a rifle I can pick up and shoot out to 500 to 600 yards and if I miss it was my fault and not the rifle.

How is it twisted?

The .260, in theory, gives up little to the Creedmoor. In reality, however, it is typically twisted slowly, handicapping it with longer, higher BC bullets. Another issue with the .260 is the lack of match grade long range factory ammo. Lastly, the .260 is at a disadvantage due to mag length.

Seems like a ton of rifle to haul around for a job that a sporter will handle, IMO.

For that $2k, you can have a reputable gunsmith build a [beeep] nice rifle.

The 260 is more of a reloaders caliber, on the count of not having a big variety of factory ammo like the creedmoor. But there are some company's that make fine match ammo like Prime.

I love my 260 and love reloading for it.

The weight is not too much of an issue as the gun is just to have in my truck or atvs and the amount of time carrying the rifle would be minimal. I know it sounds crazy to sink a chunk of change into a weapon for this but since it will be the only bolt rifle I own I want a nice rig. All other hunting for me is with an AR so I like the feel of the chassis style rifle. The Mcree G10 stock alone normally sells for around $800.

I agree the cost is high but I have found that I can get my most of my money back on limited edition type weapons if I need to. These were put together by Scott McRee at mcreeprecison and it was a limited production run. Only 157 were produced in this combination which leads me another point.....

I called and talked to Scott about the rifle and during our conversation I mentioned the color I had purchased. He informed me that there were never any FDE units produced. The rifle was advertised as FDE cerakote and in fact is Burnt Bronze. I'm not too keen on a burnt bronze rifle and will probably stop shipment on it.

I went with the .260 TRS-1 because it was a ready built chasis rig. I will opt for a 6.5 Creedmoor at this point. I don't think that caliber is available in the Sporter?

Agreed. I have a Savage 10BA Stealth that I sent back to Savage and I plan to sell it when I get it back. I want something with a shorter barrel. (It would not group consistent with factory ammo and I tried 10 different rounds.) I shot it suppressed and it's possible that my can and that barrel just could not find a happy place with factory ammo.

Choice one is to re-barrel the Savage with a 22 inch.

Choice two is to buy a Tikka T3x CTR in 6.5 Creedmoor with the 20 inch barrel and mount it in the LSS chasis which I like. The problem with this is they are almost impossible to find now. I was told they are getting ready to release a 24 inch version of this model.

Starting to think It might pay me to wait on the SHOT show now and see if anything new comes out at this point.

I'm soon taking receipt of my first chassis, so I don't have a lot to add…however…on that picture…I look at the buttstock and the scope mount and wonder, where are you going to repeatably rest your cheek to see through the scope? I've got an XLR coming the end of the week, the one you posted, I don't see how one would comfortably shoot that.

Its a McRees chassis...for some reason that photo does not show the adjustable cheek rest.

If McRee makes it, its quality and it works.

A true statement. The photo is misrepresentation of the the rifle just like the mistake with the color of the chasis.

However it's my understanding that to to stay competitive they tried to trim weight and only produced the rifle with a cheek rest on one side only. The photo does not reflect that.

Well, my McRees has a two piece cheekrest, and I only use one side. Typically, the side I dont use is just collapsed all the way down, out of the way. I dot think a one sided rest would bother me a whole lot.

Here's my 260 GMan and with the 130 Bergers it's a killing machine.
I killed these 4 and had 2 run offs(found dead the next day) out of a sounder of 12.
sorry for the huge pics,

That's awesome Crow..... I'm going after a big boar tonight with the new 6.5 Grendel build.

I'm putting a chasis rig together now in 6.5 Creedmoor. Should have it up and running by early next week. I will post a pic.

I really need a day rig with some reach..... taking a road trip out to San Antonio to hog hunt for a friend out there in a few weeks.

And here's my recent purchase the Tikka CTR 260 Stainless. It loves everything I have fed it so far ,the 123's, 130's and the 140's. amazing for a Factory Rifle. I'm impressed.
sorry for the huge pics.

This is a typical group with the Tikka 260, But I think I'll stay with the 130 Bergers,
they shoot a little Flatter at long range. Seems like everything I feed it shoot 1/2 to 3/4 moa.
Gman the 260 will be the Grendel on Steroids!!
Good luck on your hunt!.
