Cheap, easy mounted Fox/Coyote Decoy

I told a couple guys I'd post pics of what I use instead of a mounted fox or coyote decoy. The following decoys mimic a red fox/coyote at the spot where that distressed rabbit is making all the noise. I have a coyote decoy too but never use it. The fox won't scare off foxes and the coyotes seem to hate it!

If you use the coyote decoy, it will scare off any foxes that come in.

The decoy is made from newspaper, flour and elmers glue. It's built on a wire frame with a wire handle sticking out of it's back. It's then sprayed with a flat finish laquer to waterproof it (somewhat) The decoy in this picture is about six years old and still going strong.

Wow, Randy, maybe you should be carving crafty things out of marble for an art gallery. Nice job on the fox/coyote decoy. Thanks for sharing.

Do you use the decoy at every stand? If not, what circumstances prompt you to place the decoy on a calling stand? I'm sure the height of the surrounding cover would influence your decision, but what other things do you look for before you place your decoy?

Wow, those are really cool! Nice job! I have been wondering if it would be advantagous to have a coyote or fox decoy while calling with a injured prey call. I am glad to hear it works and I am sort of handy with paper mache (if I do say so myself).

Thanks for the info. I will have to give it a try.

Silverfox,

I don't take it on every stand. In fact the only stands I use it on are those that have a great deal of visability for an incomming coyote. I don't use it when I hunt foxes although it doesn't seem to scare them off when they see it.

My main time to use it is in ND when the terrain is WIDE OPEN and the coyotes need SOMETHING to see when they come to the call.

Again, as with any decoy in wide open spaces, it's probably not needed. Usually by the time they see it, it's too lake and they are dead. But, it helps once in a while when you have one that would like to hang up on you. They see it, get all confident and come in.

It still doesn't work as well as my wiener dog though.

Randy

They are easy to make and are another trick your bag of tricks. Certainly worth it.
