I hate CHIGGERS today I did a little scouting forgot to put my OFF on when I headed out so when I got home I started iching and have been iching ever since saw a plethora of the little SOB's crawling on my legs took a shower in rubbing alcohol and chigarid still didn't get them all. I can't wait until the first frost

Let me tell you what works for me. We have a lease in South Texas and Chiggers are a fact of life.

We keep a bottle of 50-50 Clrox Bleach and water next to the shower. We never apply any OFF or other repellant.
Every evening when we come in from working outside we first spray the mixture from the waste down. Rubbing it in good, then taking a shower.

Never, Never have a problem with chiggers. It is a little hard to breathe for a few seconds, so keep the room ventilated.

No, it will not bleach your leg hairs.

Bleach will do great. I use a different approach. I run a tub of warm to hot water and add a couple cups bleach to the water. get in and soak for about 10 minutes, Drain and shower. They will be gone. Randy

I spray my clothing a couple of hours ahead of time with Permanone and skip all the drama.

Since I started using Permanone and\or a good layer of Skin so Soft, I can count on one hand the number of chigger bites I have had in the last ten or so years. Sometimes I use one or the other, sometimes both because I am a ready made meal for those little bastards. The Permanone also kills ticks when they touch your pants and the Skin so soft makes me smell sweet for my hunting buddies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I used OFF for years as a kid growing up around the farm doing chores, and, in early fall season hunting & spring turkey season. I would still surrender a pint or two of blood to the chiggers and ticks. I also melted the LCR screen on my first bass boat while night fishing by over spraying the stuff. Who'd a thunk it'd melt plastic like that? OFF was all we had and all we knew, so we did the best we could with what we had.

After college graduation with a biology degree the first job I could muster was with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources as a State Park Naturalist. Immediately upon hiring and assignment to my park, the first need for me was tidying up some long neglected hiking and horse trails. It was summer and I knew the trail crew and I would be lucky to survive the savage Ozark chigger. Not to mention ticks. We would be exposed to these meat eating and blood sucking predators for days on end and I wasn't looking forward to the campain. Especially the "pain" part. As I was rummaging around collecting the gear for the trail crew I ran across a case of Permanone. I had never heard of the stuff at the time. When I inquired about it, a sage old timer from another park filled me in. WOW, what a godsend! I can remember marveling each evening at how relatively unmolested I was after a long day in the brush. I've never had need to look elsewhere since that time years ago for chigger/tick protection.

It is my understanding that it was originally developed for the military. I have used it by the book because I was warned that you should not get it on your skin. I sprayed it too thick on a pair of pants one day and felt a wet spot on my leg by my right knee when I put the pants on. A short while later I developed a spot about the size of a coffee can lid that is knumbed slightly to the sensation of touch. To this day that spot is still there.

I put it on my socks, boots, pants, shirts and jackets pretty strongly. It lasts for a couple of days.

I am very careful when I use it now. I like it and it works quite well for me to ward off ticks and chiggers.

Oh and for the record...I do not own stock in the company that makes it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The really good thing about chiggers is that when they do quit itching, it's almost hunting season again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I hunt S. Tx. and the permanone works pretty well. Still get a few tick bites and chiggers, though. Listerine helps reduce the itching for a couple of hours if you do not have cortizone cream.

Will the clorox mix do any good once they have already bitten you?

Yes! If you get to them as soon as you feel the itch. I've rubbed in the clorox mix and it killed them instantly.

Also, for everyone, I discovered another use for the clorox.
Yesterday when we got in from work, there was a trail of ants clear across the kitchen floor. Happens every time it gets real dry.

Since I did not have anything else to try, I sprayed them with straight clorox bleach. It killed them quickly and stays on the floor killing the others as they came out of the wood work.

I've not seen another ant, Yet. Sure smells better than those commercial ant sprays. Makes the floor sterile.

Thanks, lwmabra, even w/permanone we manage to get a few bites nearly every trip. Will add the clorox to my kit.
