choke and shot size for coons

For the guys that hunt coons with shotguns. What are you using for a choke and what size shot works well?

Thanks,
Tyler

I've killed them with everything from #6's to No. Four Buck. If I were specifically coon hunting then that means using dogs or coon calling to me and that probably means no shot farther than 25 - 35 yards. A modified, improved modified, or even a full would be ok choke wise I think. If forced to one choke it would be between modified and full - the improved modified constriction. Probably a decent quality load of #4's would be about right. If I changed shot size it would be to a bigger shot like #2's rather than going backward to smaller sizes.

I'm not a coon hunter, but in Mississippi, it's no shot larger than #6, and standard .22 rimfire, from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise.

Dammed if I understand how a game agency can saddle a law abiding citizen with some of these stupid laws. What's the point of that law? Is it really going to prevent a poacher from doing his thing? Poachers are criminals, they disregard the laws as a part of doing their business. All a dumbazz law like this does is handicap both the honest hunters and the actual game being pursued.

I've shot exactly one coon with high brass #6 and it didn't phase him much. Now to be honest that was a long ways back, used a modified choke and had no idea of the concept of patterning so I could of been throwing some god awful patterns.

This year I've decided I'm gonna carry a 12ga for coon callin. We have 2 other gunners that will be using rimfires and I'm gonna concentrate on fast moving runners and let them have the slow movers. The load I've chosen is Heavy shot BB. With modified choke my patterns were god awful but with the full choke I get an even 2 foot spread at 25 yards. Some of out coon can get as big as a fair sized coyote with thick hide and lots of fat.

I haven't crossed other loads off the list including some 2 3/4 4 buck and 3" #4's I have around but the heavyshot loads should do the trick well.
