Chrome lined or not chrome lined?

I was looking through the new Bushmaster catalog and I like the new predator and varmint rifles they have, but they do not have a chrome lined barrel. Is it better to go with the chrome lined target or will the chrome vanadium barrel last as long as the chrome lined barrel and which is more accurate?

There's good reason why they didn't chrome line those varminter barrels. If it's for a varminting rig, you probably want to steer clear of chrome lining because it's not conducive to good accuracy. Sure, it toughens the barrel up and that's why it serves a good military/law enforcement purpose. For high-volume training and shooting, that barrel will last a whole lot longer. But, they can't get that lining in there perfectly even and that is supposedly why it diminishes accuracy. There will always be exceptions to this rule, but chrome lined barrels are not usually going to be super tackdrivers and my Bushmaster A3 upper is no expection. It's a 1.5"-2" shooter for the most part.

When I went looking for a vamint upper, I made very sure that chrome lining was NOT a feature of the barrel. The chrome lined barrel will indeed last you longer. However, unless you will be placing barrel life over accuracy, I'd go unlined.

What exactly is a "chrome lined" barrel? Is the bore chrome plated or is the barrel made from two pieces of metal? I've always assumed a "chrome barrel" meant plated bore. Someone set me straight.PC

A "chrome lined barrel" has the bore chrome plated. A "chrome barrel" is ambiguous because they may be talking about a chrome-moly barrel, which is regular steel.

If you're abusive with your rifle, like heating it rather fast, or lazy with cleaning, then a chrome lined is really nice. I fit the above descriptions with my AR, and it's really really nice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

It all depends on what you want and are expecting.

If I was shooting for scores or reaching way out for prairie poodles, then I'd stay away from chrome lining.
