Chukar

Do some google searching. I'm sure you will find something. I had a neighbor(40 yrs ago) the raised, quail, chuckar and pheasant.
That was in Sumter,SC. I know the pheasant were put and take as they would not survive. I imagine the situation would be similar for the chuckar in that part of the country.

The net has produced some info. I am looking to see if anyone has first hand knowledge. I have read that they are very easy to raise and here in PA. they can be hunted year round.

They are easy to raise. Build as big a pen as you can. Get chick's and put them in a brooder with an opening leading into the pen. I used to feed and water mine thru funnel's and hose's so I could stay away from them as much as possible. You don't want them acting like chicke's, they need to run from you, preferably flush. You can also keep them in a johnny house with a re-entey door and they will re-call like a quail. Turn loose all hens or all rooster's the the ones in the pen will call back the loose one's.

I know of a guy that claim's to have had a cat declawed and threw it in with his birds to keep them wild. I've never tried that. But I do have a propagation permit and I can trap wild birds with it. I used to trap some wild Hun;s and Valley quail to put in with my pen raised birds and they got the pen birds really wild.

I have raised them for dog training they will bunch up in corners if spooked by loud noises when they are chicks so keep them in a quiet area. If they pile on each other they will suffocate the bottom ones. But overall they are pretty easy, there is a ton of info on the net.

Thanks Dale! I am also looking to raise them for dog training. I heard it is better to build a raised pen. It prevents disease anyone know of a need for this?

I know guys that raised birds on wire but I don't know how much it helped. Mine were always on the ground. A guy I know in eastern Ore raises a batch of Bob's and after each bunch tills inside his flight pen and re plants befor new birds go in. He had the best quail I ever saw. The chicks he raised in a good size house with a heat light hanging and saw dust on the floor.

I know of alot of guys that raise them on the ground as well as me. I put alfalfa hay in with them to give them some bedding and something to pick at, they are cannibals so they pick ta each other

I raise quail and pheasants.

Also chuckars in small batches.

I raise about 3,000 Bobwhites and I'm well connected with some large (40,000) Pheasant and Chukar growers. Raised wire keeps you out of disease problems and based on my experience it's worth it. I don't know how many you're planning to raise, but it it's only a few hundred, you should easily be able to give them enough room to safely raise them on the ground. The more you crowd them, the more disease and picking problems you will have.

Here's a link to a flight pen design. I used the basic plan, but substituted steel T-posts for the arch bases and used a tarp over one end instead of building a house.

I built mine for about $0.80/sq ft without wire and $1.50/sq ft on raised wire floor.

It says you can raise up to 1,200 quail, but I would say only about 600 chukars (3 sq ft per bird).

I have a electric brooder heater and some water founts I would sell at a good price if you're interested. They work fine, I just outgrew them.

4-light brooder with wafer thermostat. Kuhl model 905-ATL
This sells new for $70 plus shipping. I'll take $35 plus shipping. I only used it for keeping day-old chicks warm while making final preparations in the brooder. Light bulbs aren't included with this or a new one. Recommend buying those locally. It takes 175 or 250W bulbs. Wafer thermostat controls 2 of four lights. You want to get this set up at least 2 days before getting the chicks as initial temperature setting can be a little tricky.
