Cinco de Mayo

Things are going to be different this year. Much more caution. For years it has been an office tradition for a bunch of us to go out at lunchtime for Mexican food on May 5th. There is no interest this year. Many are afraid to eat in any Mexican restaurant any more. Can't say as I blame them.

There is no way I can ever again eat in any restaurant with a Mexican in the kitchen. Most Mexican restaurants in Colorado hire illegals. It's a "cultural" thing. Denver is also a haven for illegals because it's a sanctuary city. I cannot tolerate the thought of some radical Aztlanista emptying his nose into my burrito before serving it to me.

I'm a pretty good cook. From now on, when I want Mexican food, it'll be from my own kitchen.

I hate Mexican food /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif. I won't go to a Chinese resturant either /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif. Bigoted old jerk aren't I /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif? I stick to my own beef, spuds and veggies, the rest can go in the garbage as far as I'm concerned /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. I hope this whole affair is such a huge backlash for them that they never recover from it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

FIESTA at NASA's house! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif What can I bring? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I love Mexican food.

So called Mexican food is just European dishes made with North American ingrediants, or Native American dishes made in European fashion.
For instance Tortillas are just flat bread made in every southern European village from Portugal to Turkey,Then it is called something else like PITA or somthing.
Beans were native to North America as were tomatoes and some forms of sweet potatoes onions and Chilies. Corn was used here for makeing flour instead of wheat or barley those grains were brought here but recipes were brought here and adapted to use native foods. Do you all think the Mayans ate tacos, or quessadillas?
Eating Mex is eating AMERICAN. Oh yea iu wouldn't worry so much about snot in the burrito more with unwashed hands or urine in the frejoles

Tequilla! Prolly the best thing that ever came out of Mexico.

Just come to Colorado's seat of mindless liberalism, environmental whacko's, and communist college professors. Just off the main street, look for a big F-250, with FUR DOWN on the plates. Give 2 calls on your howler, and I'll come down and unlock the gate. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Only if it's an uphill race, lol. My truck's geared so low a level ground race would be no contest. Now I gotta' get back down to NM to see your new wheels. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I'll make up some of that elk chili like I brought up to Wyoming last year...well a jar of the hot and a jar of the mild. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
By the way, didn't know you lived in the "Peoples' Republic of Boulder."

Boy, that stuff will take the chrome off your plumbing, LOL! There's only a few of us that can handle two bowls at one sitting. Looking forward to your next batch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Is this the story you mean Yote

History 101

There is the big celebration with waving flags and music.

Some may not know the significance of this observance so in the interest of international relationships I will explain Cinco De Mayo. Relations between the US and our sister republic to the south have been strained and so a better understanding of the Mexican observance may calm things.

In 1910 a salesman from the United States introduced a new food product to the Mexican populace, one that they had never tasted before. It was mayonnaise.

The Mexican people went wild over this new food and clamored for more. It seemed that an insatiable appetite had been created. Unfortunately, the supply was soon exhausted leaving the people yearning for more.

While sporadic attempts to satisfy this appetite were made processing facilities in the US were inadequate. It was determined that only England had the capacity to provide enough to satisfy demand. This information was relayed to the Mexican people and they anxiously awaited resupply of this exciting new food product.

Thus it was that in April of 1914 a ship set sail from England. It is a little known but true fact that three holds of the Titanic were stuffed with mayonnaise bound for Mexico.

The plan was after docking in New York to then continue on to Vera Cruz and deliver the much anticipated and longed for new food.

Alas, we all know what happened to the Titanic.

Communications being what they were in that early day the news of the Titanic disaster did not reach Mexico until the first week in May. The people were very sad and distressed when they learned of the tragedy.

Ever since that unfortunate time Mexico has observed the day when they heard about;

Cinco De Mayo!

What came first, lefsa or the tortilla?

The spanish got the idea from the indians when they first came here in 1526. But was fry bread an indian original?

Remember Eric the Red? And a fellow Viking named Bjarni Herjolfsson? About 985 these guys were plying the north East Coast of North America in search of "Vinland". The oldest (confirmed) settlement of the ancient Norsemen in North America is L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. It dates back to around 998 AD.

This "could" be the origin of the tortilla.

The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some recognition in other parts of the Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16. It was September 16, 1810 when Spanish rule was overthrown.

Ask that question out on the street and see how many know the answer.

Hey I celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and why not. The company I work for is Hispanic owned so I can go out and drink beer (Corona of course) on company time.

I lived and worked in Ireland for over 2 years. As big as we think St. Patrick's day is in this country, its no big deal in Ireland. Oh sure there is a big parade in Dublin each year but thats for the American tourists.

Everyone needs a day to celebrate. Personally I celebrate December 5. For those of you who do not remember it was on December 5, 1933 that the 21st Amendment was ratified. The reversal of prohibition. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
