CJ is on the board!

GA decided to give rifle hunters a weekend for “does only” prior to rifle season opening in a couple more weeks. Next weekend is the Start of Youth week but CJ will be on a cruise. So we went this morning.

We had a spike come in early and ran one smaller doe off that came in and then decided he could share with the larger doe.

Yeah, the cameraman sucks, lol. I blame it on that “blast” from that little gun!! It’s a Youth .243 and dear Lawd it’s LOUD!! I told him that gun is going back in the safe and he can use one of the suppressed .308’s from now on…he agreed!!

Way to go, CJ, nice shot! Those short barrels really do speak with authority. I have a .308 Savage Scout with a pretty short barrel. Came with a muzzle brake! The brake lasted a very short while; until sighting in and lifted my ear muffs to talk to a shooting buddy, then resumed firing w/o pulling them back down!

Well, we went back this afternoon with the suppressed .308 and we BOTH liked it better, lol.

It was a good day. The manager killed 2 this morning, his son in law killed 3 and CJ killed his 1.
This evening CJ killed his, my other son killed 1, and the managers wife killed one. So 9 does today. It’s a good start…only about 40-50 more to go, lol.

We have an over abundance of deer. When I first started hunting out there the manager was a “quail only” guy. He only allowed one buck and 2 or maybe 3 does. Well he wanted his son to take a “nice” buck and they sat in a stand together and saw 37 deer…3 little bucks and the rest were antlerless. He called and asked what we needed to do so my son and I sat down with him and gave our recommendations. Shoot every doe you see and quit shooting young bucks, especially those with potential.
Fast forward about 3-5 years and we’ve had a 172”, 168”, about 6-7 150”+, and some really old old 130-140” buck killed off the place. Last year 4 bucks were killed…143”, 150”, 153”, and a 155” and all were 5.5+
Luckily GA gave us this early weekend with rifles to get a head start on our doe harvest. Our State limits are 10 does (antlerless) and 2 bucks with one of them needing at least 4pts on one side. I personally have a love/hate relationship with chasing a particular buck. I get consumed with them. I may “follow” a buck with potential for 3-4 years until they reach maturity before attempting to take them.
Part of our issue is this is a working plantation and we have hunts generally on the weekends so no deer hunting takes place. No deer hunting when the owners are in town as well.
Once we finally got everyone on board, we’ve done really well with creating a really FUN rut period. Fights and chasing are seen by everyone now. Plus we have bucks we’ve never seen showing up, so the potential is always there during that time even if you have nothing particular you’re chasing.

I don’t think anyone hunted this morning, but we’re about to head out to see if we can get him another. We were at the processors yesterday before anyone else had even seen a deer.
I have a stand in a drain that I feed for hogs 365 days a year for the last 3-4 years. Deer roam through all day long.
I did get a pic of a 4.5yr old last night that could really be something next year.

And before anyone thinks we’re a “trophy” only place, kids and first time hunters have the green light on whatever they want. We don’t care is it has spots or the new State record. Our only stipulation is no big buck contest or even putting them in any record books. Loose lips sink ships, lol.

I think Oklahoma should have a doe cull, at least in some areas. Southeast counties are virtually loaded with does, I have counted as many as 52 all on one freshly cut hay meadow. Not at all unusual to see groups of 10-20 frequently.

I know Arkansas is attempting get hard on the herd, or at least attempting to. In the Northern part of the state due to CDW...
Now if we could get a bit more Mexican in the Texas deer and they cross the border we too could have big deer .... LMAO

Well, we found a buck CJ wanted and have been after him the last several hunts. I’m talking morning and evening sits and he passed on one buck I would jumped on as a kid, but wanted the “big 8”.
It rained earlier today and I thought for sure something with antlers would be moving this evening but after a couple hours we’d seen absolutely nothing.
A lone doe came in a ribs were slightly showing and we held off. He’d already made the comment he’s “shooting something” this evening, lol. About 10 minutes later we spotted a couple does or doe and yearling coming in. He got ready and had to wait a while for a broadside shot.
The cameraman still needs work, lol.
Here’s the video…

I may post his recovery later.
