Clark Custom AR15 review

For any one interested I am finally getting around to righting a review for my Clark Custom AR15.

Background-
Back in January I was talking to DTEC about having him build me an AR when I ran on a deal on a used gun that was too sweet a deal to pass up.

The Specs-
Clark Custom 24 inch varmint upper
Fulton armory lower with jewel trigger
First Samco G27 Grip.
Added later: Rock River Scope mount and Burris B-Plex 4.5-14

Intial impressions-
Upper: Very impressed, heavy but apparently well made. Really like the the carbon fiber tube, I don't like latching my paws on cold steel in the winter time.

Fulton Armory lower: Good I guess although there is some upper/lower slop and the saftey was way too stiff. Trimming a couple coils off the spring fixed the prob. Not overly impressed with the finish, scratches very easily.

First Samco Grip- nice but too small for my big paws. (if somebody has one of those Bushmaster target grips or similar and wants to trade shoot me a pm.)

Burris Scope: Very bright and clear. Tracking is actually very poor but holds zero after sight in so I guess it will work. The B-plex reticle is way too thick for range work but is nice for hunting use.

Rock River mount- Very stong and heavy. Make sure you tighten the knobs down with pliers (screw driver will not work) as they WILL shoot loose if just hand tightened. Special thanks to Tom from this board for the generous donation of the mount

Intial range frustrations-
After making the long and stressfull trip to the range (from my front door to my picnic table in the front yard) I was rather disapointed with the functioning of the rifle. Every every shell short stroked and failed to pick up a fresh round from the mag. After doing some checking a couple things I noticed the buffer tube still had the factory packing grease installed and the gas block adjustment screw was screwed almost out. Fixed these probs and its ran fine for the last 200 rounds or so.

How it shoots-
Shoot a whole boat load of ammo and was abit worried at first. Ammo is listed in order tested-
Ultramax 55 grain soft points - ~1.25 inch groups
Black Hills 52 grain match - ~1 inch groups
Black Hills 68 gr. heavy match - spray it baby, spray it
Fed American Eagle 50 gr hollow point- just keep on spraying
Winnie White box hollow points- ~1 inch
Ultramax 55 Nosler B-Tip- .5 inch every time. (rember for later)
Remanufactured 69 grain Seira M.K. from local guy ~.5 inch
Ultramax 52 GR HP- ~.75 inch
Reloaded 60 GR V-Max- only shot one group, have to work with this on more.
After exhausting my supply of comercial ammo I was pretty disappointed. Only the Ultramax 55 gr B tips were showing real promise for my applications. So I figured I had no choice to take the game to hand loading which a hate. Loaded up my tried and true load of a stout load of Win 748 behind a 55 grain nosler B-tip and found pay dirt. I need to do some more testing before I'm willing to say anything for certain but so far it looks like this loads going to go .25 inch or better from this rifle. Needless to say I'm pumped although I hate the idea of having to start reloading again. I'm going to test the 60 grain v-max with varget but its going to hard to beat this nosler/748 combo.

Am I happy? I have less than $1200 in the total package. That includes the upper, lower, trigger, scope, mount, magazine, and hard case. It shoots scary accurate with my reloads. Can't ask for more than that can ya?

That all being said. To put this package together buying everything new would push 2 grand. For that kinda cash, I think I'd skip concidering that DTECs guns will probably shoot just as good for half the money.

Thats it for now. More results and pics will follow as time allows. Questions, Comments, donations are welcome.

What bbl blank is it or who chambered it. I seen them claim its a Clark bbl but who chambered the blank? Is what I was asking. Thx, jerryboy

Jerry,
The heck if I know. I assumed clark made and clambered the blank but I guess I don't really know.
What ever it is, Clark is "proud" of their upper to say the least and the price reflects it.
Like all high end ARs, I feel they are crazy over priced new.

Well, I'd ask that it shoot factory loads accurately. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Jim,
I argree with you to some degree. I was hoping that it would shoot like a house afire with a cheaper factory load. A couple of them ran around 1/2 or so. Not all that bad. I could have tried some more expensive loads like Black Hills B tips or V-maxs, Federal premium, etc but didn't see the point as I can't afford to use them for everyday use.

On the other hand, rifles have their own likes and dislikes and when it will do itty bitty groups with handloading then its hard to claim theres anything wrong with the gun in the accuracy dept.

I think alot has to do with the bbl and it's settling in.
Some bullets/loads wont shoot in a new bbl and it scares me. Then, 3 mos and a thousand rds later they are ripping one hole at 2x the range. I think we have all noticed an increse in accuracy due to bbl smoothing. Id shoot the heck out of this rifle. It should get better with time.
You will probably find it is just the tip of the iceburg now with all your testing. I buy used uppers all the time with 2-300-800 rds down the pipe. They still settle in when i break em in. They were still grouping irratically so they weren't settled yet. Fine with me, that's less $ I will have to pump down them to get to where it's nice. I have seen alot of guys sell their uppers and go get an expensive one that wont shoot as good as the one they sold me when I'm done settling it in. Go figure.

Jerry,
Will do on pumping out the round count.

When I was intially talking over getting an AR I mentioned to dad that I really liked the fact that I could shoot the crap oughta it it and if I shot it out I could just buy a new barrel for not all that much moment.

He kinda looked at me funny and asked "Yeah, but who wanted to buy a new barrel?"

I'd replied, "Truth be told I don't want to have to buy a new barrel someday. That takes money. But I can tell you for sure that I'd much rather pay for a new ar barrel than pay to have an HK 630 rebarreled."
