claw style scope mounts

Has any one on here used them.
I just bought a rifle here in Germany that has the claw style mounts. it currently has a tasco 4x40 on it that is pretty junk. I looked them up online and its saying to have these style of mounts installed on a rifle your talking $500+. well I bought a new vortex for the rifle. but not sure if I want to stay with this style of mount or just switch to a normal permanent base. Just seeing if any one has any input. thanks

Claw mounts work very good, they are highly repeatable and simple to use(no tools required). Very expensive, your estimate sounds a little low by 1/2 unless your in Germany where they are more common.

Most claw mounts are very scope specific as the front ring(if it has rings not a rail) fits the objective as the scope has to tip into the bases and OD on scope objectives aren't standard like the tube is. This is a 6x48mm Nickel scope in claw mounts with a rail instead of rings.

The scope is far to high to use for anything other than hunting from a stand and to remove and use the open sights to and from the stand. I carved a set of low rings out of pair of Weaver Grand Slam Extra High steel rings, a very slow tedious task, over a month and fit has to be very precise. It will only work with a straight tube scope as the front ring has to be close to the objective of the scope so it can tip in.

Here's a drilling that is fitted with claw mounts and has a Hensoldt 4x32mm scope fitted, again too high to use other than at a stand. This gun has seen a hard life and isn't very collectable and I'm going to hunt this one hard on coyotes. Instead of going through the hassle of building another set of rings I mounted a set of Weaver bases on the rib and use Weaver standard low QD rings, the claw mounts are still functional and I can mount the original scope. Needless to say the extra holes in the rib won't help the resale but considering the gun they probly won't hurt it too bad.

How collectable is your rifle and do you care if you knock a big chunk out of the resale value by changing out the mounts? Can you find a scope to fit your claw mounts so you don't have to have a new set made? What model Tasco, they made some higher end scopes that are quite good, like a Titan.

If I were you I'd find a local smith in Germany, I was in the Frankonia Store in Nuremberg last month and they had one on sight. You can get it changed to swing mounts for a reasonable price also. You might wand to check out the German gun Collectors forum and Double Gun Forum German/Austrian gun section, will post a link.

thanks for the info. I didn't know there was a frankonia in Nuremberg. I picked the rifle up from the Frankonia out side of Frankfurt. Im not sure on the model of the tasco. It has the thick posts that come in form three sides. Just not a real fan of it. I plan on using that particular scope on drive hunts and wanting to get something with a little more power for ansitz. The rifle isn't a collectable that I know of. its a voere. Not sure of the model. its a 7x64 with the double set triggers. not sure if your familiar with the wittlich area. but there a smith in nerdlen who speeks english. I was going to take the rifle to him to see what he can do with it. I only paid 240Euro for the whole set up.
