I just ordered a ghillie suit and was wondering what(if anything)I need to do to it before hunting with it?I currently don't use a cover scent but thought the smell of burlap seems foriegn in the woods.Any help would be greatly appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My ghilllie suit hangs outside every day of the year under the overhang on the back porch. It's been out there for a long time too. It still smells like burlap, not as strong as it once did, but if I can smell it, they can too. That being said, I think it actually helps in covering my scent. Anyway, that may be a dumb statement, but the ghillie is still the best camo I have ever worn on the ground. I don't clean it at all, just let it hang out in the rain every now and then.

I would not worry too much about the smell.

If you do not want to hang your new Ghillie suit outdoors, another option is to:

1. Always treat it with a fire retardent chemical, usually in a spray format. Failure to do this may cause the out-gassing combustible vapors to ignite when you get near a flame source. Breathing flame is not good for your hunting future.

2. Next, treat the burlap and cloth with a water repellant spray. These cammo suits get very, very heavy when wet. They also look more "natural" when water beads on them.

3. You can spray the inside and outside with one of the scent-removing sprays and repeat this step two or three times until the overpowering burlap fragrance is minimized.

Be sure to let the Ghillie Suit dry completely between operations.

Be sure to air it out after wearing it.

I keep mine in a plastic trash bag that has the "earth scent" stuff in it. The Ghillie Suit smells like fresh, loamy earth.

Just a thought.

Merry Christmas

My Ghillie suit came with instructions to bury the bugger in the dirt for a few days before using it. I think that a more better approach would be to throw the suit inside a closed box with a bunch of cedar branches for a week.

I don't have cedar trees around my house but I've got pine for days so I'm thinking like you but going to use the pine. 👍👍👍

I always hung mine outdoors a few days before hunting, and rubbed it around lightly in the dirt, pine needles, etc.

Your worried about a smelly ghillie suit for and animal whose dumb cousin that can smell a joint in a Ziploc bag at the bottle m of a gym bag filled with dirty jock straps, sweaty T-shirts and nearly rotten socks.

Or a dirty trap under ground with rotten meat and skunk scent next to it and the sprayed all over with aged urine.

Don't let them in the scent cone.

I would agree with AWS. The coyotes are going to smell you if they get downwind regardless of what you do to minimize scent. We were hunting together yesterday and I don't think either of us would want to smell the others Gilli suit.
I'll put my Gilli suit on a gentle wash in the washing machine a couple times a year but just try to keep really bad scents off it such as gasoline as much as I can.

When I wash my hunt cloths. I run a wash/rinse cycle the washer once to clean it out. Then I throw items in the wash, and just use Baking Soda for a cleaner. Then hang dry.
I not worried about getting out set-in stains. I just want to refresh and clean off the major odors. It seems to work good for me.

I forget y’all live where it gets cold and open areas. A ghillie suit here would have you at the hospital for a heat stroke if it lasted that long. Couldn’t imagine walking through briars and everything else without getting bogged down or it ripped to shreds. And yes, I tried one way back in the day, lol.

In the open prairie, where there's not much to hide in, except maybe an occasional yucca, they can be helpful, especially on sunny days.
However, there's not much point in making a special effort to de-scent any coyote hunting clothing. If they get downwind, they're going to smell you. Period. The End.
