as everyone knows i love antler calls they are a work of art

.
as of last weekend i discovered that for the second time i froze and shattered the finish on the antler portion on a custom call

(at myself).
i think antlers swell when they freeze.
don't get me wrong i'll still buy them and trade for them
thumbup.gif
but i will not hunt them in cold weather

.
i think the stabilized antlers cure the problem but haven't really tried one out

keep this in mind if you are going calling with a antler call in sub zero temps

.
just a heads up

.
first one i thought it was just THAT antler but now i think all antlers have some water retained in them and they expand when it freezes shattering any hard gloss finish on them
cry.gif
.
yes i ruined a call
glare.gif
but i had a quad of coyotes come in lol

got the first one but the others busted out like a flock of quail

not givin me any chance for a double out of them.
guess it was worth it lol

i would make sure its a junk call first mikeymike
i don't feel its any fault of the call makers just the nature of the material its made of, something to look out for with the antlers.
both calls are vary high end calls two of my favorites
one maker said to send it to him for a fix (i'll send it next year when i see him in person)
i haven't talked to the other maker yet.
like i say the problem isn't there fault its the antler can't be frozen.
i'm going to get kerry to make me one thats been stabilized and see if that fixes the problem. when i can aford one that is.
tony did you and kerry do anythig with that horn yet?

Casey, we haven't had time to do anything with the horn at all. I still have it but it will defiantly be a while before we can do anything with it

next time I do some stabilizing I'll do some antler and make a call out of it, I'll send it to you to do some testing

cool i thought the first antler just had moisture because it was old but now i think its going to be all antler
i bet the stabilization fixes it.
i love antler calls and i think this will cure its setbacks

well no call is a junk call to me its just one i made and if it does ill take pics and post on here but it is worth trying so if it does happen to mine it wont happen to me on a stand liek the unfortinate of yours... thanks for the head up its been in the freezer for over an hour with no affect to it yet but i glue and poly the inide and out of my call so the glue might help (ca glue that is)

well i just pulled my call out of the freezer with no visibale damage and figured what the heck and threw it in the microwave for 2 mins to go from extreame cold to extreame heat as fast as i can make it and the finish survived it though i dont know if i will in the morning when my wife opens it up and smells the cooked finish lol but its back in the freezer for over night to see what the extream diffrences in temp will do to the finish im trying to figure out what would cause the finish to bust of the antler

if it is mine let me know. i only polish these day's. i have alot of cracked call's from Great callmaker's. there mainly 2 piecer's that is why i never make a 2 piece just me. i have a good moisture meter for my wood's. Rick

its not yours rick,i'll let the makers know who's it was.
so everyone relaxes

keep in mind this isn't their fault i'm sure its antlers in general just most people are not out in the -10 temps and -30 wind chills.
i love both the calls they are a work of art i just took them out in weather they couldn't handle.
i hate to put it out by name but everyone was worried it was one of theirs and sending pm's
relax
the finish shatters only on the antler parts of the calls the calls still work its just the clear coat shattering.

Was the antler turned or natural? I could see a issue on certain finished on turned antler as well as some woods. It's just a nature of some finishes in freezing temps. IMO
Good luck Casey. I have no doubt that the issue will get resolved.

That's one of the main reasons I went to stabilizing. Porous antler with a gloss finish and way below freezing temps will not work.. A nice oil finish on antler will work great. A gloss finish is built up on the outside of the call, an oil finish soaks into the call and will not come off.

sorry if i caused a panic that wasn't my intent.
i still use both calls so they are going to get battle scares no need to repair the finnishes because i'll wear the finish off using them lol
they still sound fantastic and call coyotes.
both call makers would repair them but its coyote season so (the calls)they have work to do.

I never put clear coat on the outside of antler. I just polish and wax them good and they seem to hold up well. I try not to use the very punkey stuff.
