Close Call with my Black Lab!!

So Maggie (my black lab) and I are on our 3rd stand of the day. I've already missed one coyote we called in, wouldn't even of seen it though if Maggie wouldn't have winded it first as it came in up wind of us.

So the foxpro's batteries die 2 minutes into the stand, oh well i've called plenty with the mouth calls around my neck. After a couple howls and yips on the mouth calls I spot a VERY hard charging coyote about 1,000 yds out. In less than 10 seconds this coyote is at 500 yds and Maggie sees it too. Sure enough my well trained bird dog waits until the coyote gets to 100 yds and breaks.

For a split second I think the coyote is gonna see an 80 black dog charging at it and turn tail and run. My first thought was wrong!! The coyote turns and bristles ready for the fight.

By now i've got the gun up and I can see a Lab and a Coyote in the scope at the same time, I can honestly say I've never seen that before. Maggie has a small water drainage she has to run through about 30 yds before she gets to the coyote. As she drops into the drainage I send a hollow point about a foot over her head and into the coyote.

When I look up I see brown coyote fur flying, thank the Good Lord no black lab hair is flying!! Maggie is on the downed coyote less than a second later, but the nightmare has been avoided!

Well there it is, a true redneck story from the truest redneck you all know!!

Happy Hunting,

Good story and those coyotes can get mean.. I've had 4 ambush and attack a 30lb Mt. Curr and the only harm was they ripped the shock collar off his neck.

This decoy dogging can be exciting and scary at times.

Good work.

I know an awe full lot of rednecks and that's a good story! I can only wish my Black Lab Mary had those kind of guts. I do have a Beagle that might be game though...

I was taking my Black Lab female coyote calling some but I was worried the whole time.

When she took off after a coyote when a pair came in I decided not to take her anymore. A coyote would tear her up in just a few seconds.

Sounds like a shot I wouldnt of taken. No coyote is worth losing a dog over, one mess up and you could of had an accident.

Risky shot IMO I have beagles, and passed up many a rabbit beacuse the dogs were too close. Would I of hit a dog? Prob not, but the "what if" factor is too great for me.

Hard to say what I would have done in that situation, because I don't know your dog.

If you allow your dog to charge a coyote, it just seems logical that you should expect your dog to get bit at some time. I think everyone knows the old saying about playing with fire and getting burnt.

Though I have never tried it, and it's not denning season yet, I wonder if standing up and yelling at the coyote would have caused it to just run off?

I seen no problem here. From what I see he is a bird hunter who obviously shoots over his dog alot (ever quail hunted?). As a fellow bird hunt and lab owner I know he wouldn't take a risk of shooting his dog. He obviously hit his mark and not his dog.

We've got a brown lab here that's quite the coyote dog, he's my tenant's dog so we care for him as he's gone most of the week.

He's 8 years old now and been through a lot of fights with coons, coyotes, and even mountain lions twice, one mountain lion sliced his stomach open and I kid you not he lost half his peter in that skirmish.

Jarod said he never worried about Red and one coyote, it was the doubles and triples. He was saying one of the funniest things he ever saw was Red taking off over the hill hot on the tail of one Yote, only to realize there were three more waiting out of sight. The dog came back toward Jarod with four coyotes on his tail like he was saying shoot these darn things, what are you waiting for?

I wouldn't be critical of your adventure. That said I do think you under estimate the physical abilities of your 80 pound lab.

Not that you want your dog cut up, that would be a given in a fight. However if push came to shove in a one-on-one situation with the coyote in your photo I know who I would put my money on.

Agreed, it's just that you've probably very seldom if ever seen your lab/s backed into a corner. I had one that was death on coons, big and small, killed a couple in the water pheasant hunting before I could get to him.
