Colorado man fights off, kills mountain lion during trail run, suffers serious injuries

A Colorado runner was attacked Monday by a mountain lion during a trail run in the northern part of the state that resulted in puncture wounds to his face, arms, legs and back and the death of the animal.

Rebecca Ferrell, a spokeswoman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, tells The Coloradoan the man was running alone at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space near Fort Collins when he was attacked from behind.

The runner, whose name has not been released, fought off the cougar-- killing it in the process-- and hiked out of the area and drove himself to a hospital. The Denver Post reported that the runner suffered serious injuries that included facial bite wounds and lacerations to his body. He is expected to recover.

Wildlife officers searching the trail found the juvenile mountain lion's body near several of the runner's possessions. They estimated that the animal weighed about 80 pounds.

“The runner did everything he could to save his life. In the event of a lion attack you need to do anything in your power to fight back just as this gentleman did,” Mark Leslie, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Northeast Region
manager, told KKTV.

The last mountain lion attack in Colorado was reported in June 2016 in Pitkin County.

“Mountain lion attacks are not common in Colorado and it is unfortunate that the lion’s hunting instincts were triggered by the runner,” Ty Petersburg, area wildlife manager for CPW, said. “This could have had a very different outcome.”

I want to know how you can best kill a mountain lion with your bare hands. No weapon is meantioned.

Probably omitted on purpose.

The mountain lion was reported to be an 80lb juvenile. Tough? Yes. Indestructible? No. At 80lb you could get behind it and strangle it or slam it down hard enough to kill it.

I personally wouldn't want to go hand to paw against one, but taking some stitches beats the alternative.

Even a 10 pound house cat that doesn't want to be messed with can bite & shred your forearms getting away. I realize with a house cat you are not fighting for your life but try hanging on to one that wants none of it without some kind of aid like a gauntlet gloves, catch pole, big towel, or fish net is pretty tough to do. Maybe he was a martial artist.

Note to self - don't screw with that runner.

It’s amazing what one can do when filled with adrenaline. That’s one tuff mother to do what he did. I bet he gets hate mail if they release his identity. I can’t imagine a house cat weighing 80 lbs, a wild cat is a whole other animal. I can’t believe they can get to 200 pounds. That guy would be spread around the woods in little steaming piles if that cat were that big. Just more reason not to go into cat, bear, or wolf country unarmed.

This guy could probably cut his air off.

yeah, uh huh. Good luck taking a 80# squirming, claw flinging, teeth baring wild cat and picking it up and getting it body slammed. I'd pay to watch.
As was said, a house kitty that doesn't want to be held down can do some serious damage without evening fighting for its life.
That jogger is tougher than most.

Bareknuckle brawling with a healthy mountain lion is high on my list of things to avoid.

Like GC, Mano a mano with a mountain lion (even a kitty) is very high on my list of things to avoid....just under climbing that "hill" with or without ropes!

I've had to catch a herd of ferral cats on an enclosed porch before.10-12 lbs of pure evil. They turn around in their own skin, bite and maul the heck out of you. I wouldn't volunteer to take on 80 lbs of fury, but if I had to, I would go for the throat, that is the cat's weakness. They (normal cats) choke down very quickly and can be accidentally killed just trying to control them. I would squeeze a ML for all it's worth and hope the claws didn't disembowel me.

Sometimes a brief moment of pure azz luck gives a man the advantage. Definitely a a tough SOB, but he’s luckier than he is tough. I’d recommend he buys a lottery ticket.

Wow, I can't imagine. Like was said, I don't even mess with our big tom cat, he can get mean if provoked enough.

Pretty sure he didn't wake up with the idea of choking 80lbs of teeth and claws to death. My bad. He used a rock THEN choked it to death. He did what he needed to do to survive, he is tough. Guess he didn't read how tough house cats are...
