We drew unit 19 for 1st season rifle elk in colorado, anyone know where to go in this unit? We plan to pack in on horse/mule, would just like some info on this unit as it was a second choice draw and we have never been there before. Kurt

Been years since I hunted there. Along the north edge of rocky mtn natl park is pretty good. You will need to be at least 1 or 2 miles from ANY road accessible by motorized vehicles.

Get the Roosevelt National Forest map and some topo maps.

It can be good if you get away from the crowds. It sounds like you have a plan with the use of a pack string. Use these crowds to your advantage and let them push the elk to you. On opening day I would focus most on the large draws and the saddles as this is where the elk will be moving thru when they start getting pushed around. I would look towards the Rawah or Commanche Peak Wilderness areas on the west side fo the unit.

If it is 19 and not 7,8, 9... Then I would focus on the Neota Wilderness area. Some areas I have always had succes archery season is around Trap lake. There is an old logging road that goes straight up to a nice big valley. Once you hit the bottom of the valley you can climb up the slpoe on teh north side to a big flat. On that flat you can glass for miles. It is Good coutry and once your on top you can hunt a bunch of directions. THis country is really high so be prepared for several inches to feet of snow if teh weather gets too bad. But that ealry it usually only snows some. I used to hunt up Joe Wright Creeek, over to the area I am talking about. If you go further south near Long Draw Res. There is Big Iron Mountain. There are usually some Elk there, but they seem to move into the Park at first presuure. The edge of Rocky mountain park is ok, but I would not hunt there. By the 2nd week of archery most all teh elk have figured out they are safe on teh other side.

All these areas are pretty high and if there is lots of pressure or harsh weather the elk drop out fast. If that is the case or u spend a 1 1/2 days without much elk then Try going Down teh River to teh Stove Prarie area towards Crown Point. There is a nice area there for when the elk are pushed off teh wilderness.

If you can hunt units 7 + 8 then you might consider looking into an area above the "Tunnel" the Tunnel is an underground Water Tunnel that runs water. There is a pArking area right at the bottom of the area, but the trail may not be possible on horse only foot. ONce on top you get into an area know as green rigde. There are usually good number s in that area. As the pressure gets more the elk slip off teh top side into the step edges of Poudre Canyon. There is good water and parks there. You can access the area from a 4X4 trail or from teh bottom right by the tunnel. Down the road about 4 miles is a state DOW section that you can cross and get up on teh same country as well

So.... Trap Lake/Iron Mountian/ Stove Prairie Towards Crown Point or Green Ridge above the tunnel...

I hunted all teh area at one time or another
