We didn't get drawn so we are thinking of going over the counter for Elk in unit 78. Anyone with any experience in this unit or any of the over the counter units for that matter. This will be my first time Elk hunting any advice would be appreciated. Any.... weather to expect, what to bring.. etc. Thanks.

I live in 72 and hunt and guide in 72,73,70,71, and 711.What season are you going to hunt? There are plenty of elk over most of the western part of the state. Would plan for everything from 80's to 30's temp wise and dont forget the raingear.

Hey Wackmaster, thanks for the reply. There are 4 of us going. My best friend, his Dad, and my Father-in-law. We are going Oct 20-28th. Should be a great time. It sounds as though we can hunt any of the units that are over the counter, would you suggest a different one than 78 for any reason??

Expect all extremes in weather! Especially if there are any hurricanes brewing off the pacific coast of Mexico /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Mix a hurricane down there with a cold fron out of the North or Northwest and......., well, that brings me to your other question; what to bring. Everything! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I never have hunted that part of the state so can't give any advice on 78.

Oct 20-28th...the elk are gonna be up high. Look in the dark timber above 8000ft. I would also look on on the north face of the mountains.

I too have not hunted Unit 78, but I have taken quite a few elk in Unit 80 on the north face of Fox Mountain. It is like elk central with highways.

I'm sure there are elk in Unit 78, but you might have to get off the beaten path to find them. That area of the state does not recieve much hunting pressure. The moisture has been good so they have fed well... I would expect nice racks on those bulls.

Again you are gonna have to go up high in October to find them... you might want to go a little earily to get aclimated to the altitude....you will be hiking a lot.

I would suggest talking to a hunting/sporting goods dealer in the nearest town to the area you are planning to hunt. The elk will be where you find them. Hi/low/and in between. Why are you looking at 78 versus any other unit on the west slope? If you have experince or know someone there than I can see why but there are lots of units else where that are generaly flatter/easier to hunt for you flatlanders! Just teasing a bit but it is something to consider.

Hey thanks Wackmaster. That is exactly the kind of info I am looking for. I think we were looking at 78 because one of the guys going has friends who have hunted there. None of us that are going have ever been there or know anyone from the area. I am all for something that is easier. My father-in-law doesn't have the greastest knees and my buddies dad also has some health issues so the easier the better. Plus I am fat and out of shape myself.lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

We have 4 wheelers that we can bring for the areas that they are allowed in.

What unit (that is over the counter) would you suggest, and if you dont mind my asking a general area for a starting point within that area??

Coloradoosprey, thanks for the info also

Thanks for everyones help. It is much appreciated.

Stoney, i'd take/use a decent spotting scope some and concentrate on north/west facing slopes during the midday, especially if there's some snow on at that time (probably not, but u never here in CO). That'll definitely save the legs some.

stoney15, Why dont you PM me and we will exchange #'s. It is a lot easier to talk it through. Like how many in your party, physical limitations, past experince, expectations, gear you might need and gear you wont, ect.
