Colt AR 15 questions, Please help??????????

I am looking at a used Colt AR15 223 that has the handle on the top instead of the flat barrel for mounting the scope. If you put a scope on the handle it will be several inches above the barrel. How will this affect the sighting in of the gun. If I sight it in dead on at 100 yards, what will it be at 200 yards. Will there be a bigger variance than with a conventional rifle? Thanks, Comanche.

It sounds like you're looking at buying a "conventional" AR-15 rifle. The fixed carry handle on top is how the original rifles from Viet Nam until the M-4 carbine came about for military use were generally configured.

To answer your question, mounting a scope on top of the fixed carry handle is not the best use of the handle.

Are you sure the carry handle is not removable on the rifle you're looking at? If it is removable, that would solve your scope mounting problem.

The thing I find most annoying about mounting a scope over the carrying handle is that you shoot 4" low at close range. It is pretty easy to shoot under an animal if you don't remember that.

Have to agree with Jack. It is not long range but short range you will see a tremendous difference in point of impact. 100 to 200 will be the same as anyother AR.

Don't buy a carry handle model, you will regret it sooner or later, get a flat top, it is far more versatile. Quite frankly...Colts are over rated, get a Bushmaster or Rock River.

It's a bit easier to install optics on the flat top AR, as there are more options available.

As far as a Colt AR-15 goes, I've owned a Colt AR-15 long before some of the johnny-come-lately assemblers started putting their rifles together. The Colt rifles are every bit as good as, if not better than, the other ARs out there. Furthermore, the Colt rifle will hold its value better than the others too. That being said, buy what AR you want. It's your money. MI VHNTR

Your Colt, with a fixed handle, will have a different trajectory than one with a lower mounted scope, but will not affect the accuracy of the rifle... Just your ability to judge impacts at various distances.... Go the site below and enter your ballistic info and the scope height and it will calculate your point of impact at any given range..

Hope this helps

RRA are good but you are paying a lot for the name, Go with Bushmaster or a few of the other ones that are popular.
