Im looking at buying a Sig P250 or P226. Not as a hunting weapon but for personal protection. Im seriously considering chambering it in 357sig. I would like to read some discussion if any of you have experience with the 357sig round. Yea or Nay?

It's a hot round. I'd think you need to reload if you wanna shoot it enough to be good with it under pressure. Buds had a special awhile back that if you bought a 226 in 40 S&W it came with a .357 sig barrel that was an ATF turn in or something like that, for $435.

It's not for me. My opinion is that the gain in terminal ballistic performance is not worth the penalty you pay in recoil, muzzle flash, and cost of ammunition.

Iv been looking at Glock, Sig and Springfield XDm. Of these I like the XDm for all of the saftey components it has. But they dont offer it in 357sig.
I REALLY want a P226 so thats probly the way Im gonna sway. The P250 has a 1/2 inch longer barrel and its a composite frame, and it can exchange barrels for diffrent calibers. To many choices.........................

Not for me, there just isn't enough (if any) advantage over any of the more common and economical cartridges to warrant the extra expense in practice ammunition. It is a cool cartridge otherwise.

What GC said. If you are serious about more energy on target,
get a 10mm Auto. Instead of necking a 40 S&W case down to
9mm, leave it a .40 cal/10mm, and stretch it out some.

I think you want a certain pistol, so get what you want, but
choose a chamber that won't break the bank, or have you
searching for ammo, when you want to shoot it. Given a
certain model comes in 9mmx19, or 40 S&W, I would likely
choose the 40 S&W for self defense, or the 9mm for
competition/fun shooting. I can't see any reason I would
choose a 357 Sig.

I bought a Sig P229 in 357sig when they first came out. Mostly because it was something different but it's a fun hard hitting mid size gun and it's tied for 2nd as my favorite pistol I own. HK P7 being my most fav.

If you have to shoot factory ammo, you are not only more limited on selection but it cost more too.

As for a home defense caliber, if I had to pick between the 357sig and .40 I would choose the .40 everytime.

But! That doesn't mean you can't get a 226 or 229 in 357Sig and get a .40 barrel to go along with it. That way you can have 2 guns in one and they will both use the same mag.

It's a bad [beeep] round! It never fails to amaze me when shooting steel. The 9mm just kinda tips them over, the 45acp smacks them hard, but the 357 knocks the living [beeep] out of them!

My dad shoots and loves the caliber but has MUCH more experience shooting pistols than me and is better able to handle the recoil. I personally am not able to shoot it accurately after the first round.

Again, it's an awesome round that hits hard. Is the cost, recoil, muzzle blast, noise, ect.. worth it? That's a call that only you can make!!

Your right, they are a hard hitting little bugger. When I first got mine they used to have these bowling pin shoots on Wed. nights at the indoor range. I don't remember exactly how they broke up the classes but they were divided by caliber if I remember correctly. In one class the pins were about 2ft from the edge of the table and the other class the pins were about 4ft from the edge and your time didn't stop till all 6 pins were off the table. Because of how the classes were broke up I could use my P229 in 357sig for both but the 40 shooters couldn't. My times were always faster when I used my 357sig. I tried using a 10mm but with the extra recoil of the 10 it made my times slower. If any of you ever get a chance to go do a bowling pin shoot, do it!!! It had a very high redneck fun factor and I think it's more fun shooting "stuff" than paper.

That sounds like a lot of fun

Bud's was selling Sig Pro's 2340 in 357sig for $365 a few months ago. I bought one. They are like the Sig 2022. Mine is a power house.

I wont get into a claiber war but I like the 357 Sig, its inherently more relaible than any other defense round due to its design. All of these are 357 Sig, with 9mm conversion barrels when I want to practice on the cheap. I also have 40 barrels for them so I can pretty much shoot anythoing out of them.

i have 5 different pistols in this cartridge and really enjoy them. recoil isn't all that bad and it's fast and accurate for an handgun.
ammo can be expensive and if you reload then you will save quite a bit.
with the 125grnr's i have had them run consistently at 1404-1413fps.

Have it in a Glock 31. It hits HARD, penetrates and shoots flat. Hands down the funnest self defense round you can shoot. Ammo isn't too expensive if you know how to shop the internet.
