Looking at one for my new 17 caliber rifle. I have been using Mark 4 target scopes on almost everything I have for the last few years, so I'm out of the loop. I'm looking at the adjustable objective model.

Will this scope hold zero?

Is it clear without the halo around the outside some cheaper scopes have?

Does it answer command when adjusted?

Thanks

Are you referring to a VX-II or the current VX-2?

If the latter, I can assure you it will track well for you. And the have a clear image with no 'tunneling' IME. great scope that is in control of that price range.

Hope you really meant VX2, not VX II. Two completely different scopes; the newer 2 has basically VX III glass. Got that?

VX2 is frankly a better scope.
I have a 6-18X w/LRV reticle. Nice little scope that tracks well, seems fairly rugged, with glass as good as most would ever need. Only gripe I have is that it has Leupold's usual small-for-power field of view; e.g. mine @ 18X is about the same as my Sightron at 16.

I have a vx-2 4-12x40 ao(pn 114408). I have not mounted it,waiting for a barrel replacement. The scope will replace a 3x9 vx-2,I wanted a finer crosshair. I stepped outside and compared them, both clear edge to edge, the 4-12 has a slight change of eye relief from 4 power to 12 power setting. I will probably have the power set to 7 or 8 when I mount the scope that should mediate the noticeable change in eye relief. As a side note I have a Nikon Monarch 3 4-16 that has a much more noticeable shift. This scope will be on a 17 rem.

I too have the VX-2 in 6-18x40 with LRV reticle. It is awesome! Tracks well, holds zero, with extremely clear glass. It gives me an insane level of confidence at the range. I would love to hunt with it over a field and use it to take longs shots, just haven't gotten the chance. It is on my AR in 223 most of the time, but I put it on my Tikka T3 lite in 30-06 to developed a load for it and it handled the recoil just fine!

I really love the VX-2 and even VX-1 eyeboxes, they are extremely fast with the smallest black"donut" around them iveever scene on any scope. I like to bring up my gun and see through my scope, not see a bunch of rubber or tunnel effect.

The VX-II is a very good scope and has the Multi-Coat 4 treatment the old Vari-X IIIs had. The VX-II also has quarter-minute click adjusments like the Vari-X III had.

The VX-II is a far better scope than the old Vari-X II. They are NOT the same scope. A lot of guys don't realize the difference.

Between the VX-II and the VX-2, I'd choose the older VX-II because it has the locking ring for the ocular bell. I have one, and one only, VX-2. I will not buy another because I hate not being able to lock down the ocular focus.

I happen to have a VX-II 6-18x40mm AO with LRV reticle for sale in the classifieds. It is in flawless condition.

With all due respect, in my opinion the difference between multicoat 4 (current vx-1) glass, and the index matched and edge blackened glass in the current vx-2 is fairly significant, especially in low light hunting conditions. The non locking eyepiece on the vx-2 is stiff enough that it shouldn't move on you.

Leupold have made such dramatic improvements in the last 4-5 years. The current Arabic numbered series have the stats of at least one number higher in the previous series.

For example a vx-ii with multicoat 4 should be viewed/priced as a VX-1, which now offers the same specs. Vx-2 exceeds old VX-iii, and current VX-3 and 6 have the best coatings Leupold has ever released.

It's all pretty subjective. I was very happy with my old Vari-X II 3-9Xs which were the Leupolds I started out with, but certain features like 1/4-minute clicks became reasons to upgrade. For me personally, the non-locking ocular is a dealbreaker but it's really my only objection to the VX-2 line. Just personal preference.

I really like my VX-II 4-12x40mm AOs...they're crystal clear and easy on my aging eyes and deteriorating vision. I do agree that Leupold has really stepped it up...my VX-III 4.5-14x 40mm AO is a fine scope and I can't really see much difference between it and my VX-3 4.5-14x40mm AO. I have a VX-3 6.5mm-20x40mm AO on the way and look forward to mounting it and getting it dialed in.

I have one on both my 223 Bushmaster Varmint Special as well as my Remington 722 .222 caliber.
They are a great scope for the price, just make sure you get the fine duplex and not the standard duplex because it is too thick, especially on coyotes/fox etc., not to mention prairie dogs.
