Confused about "armor piercing" bullets

OK, I'm not a re-loader/bullet guy. Never have been.
I'm just a simple old hunter.

So, I'm kinda embarrassed to ask this.

But...What truly is meant by the term "armor piercing bullets"?

Over the years, I have personally seen the following types of bullets go thru metal up to 1/4" thick @ 100yds......basic "soft points"; hollow points; and FMJ.
All have been either .223, .243, .25-06, .7.62x39, .30/30; .30-06.

Real AP will have a steel penetrator inside the copper jacket. Some have the steel penetrator and an incendiary chage with or without tracer. Generally will go through more than non AP ammo. How much? Depends on the round. Cal 30 or Cal 50 and yes the 5.56 does come with a penetrator but for body armor not vehicles.

I was just curious, because on the news...and in TV shows/movies...that term is used a LOT.
So, I was trying to figure out what might be meant.
Thanks.

To the liberal media and the goofs in Hollywierd, anything thing shiny and pointy is armor piercing. Just like every bullet with a plastic tip is a "cop Killer".

X2 One interesting thing happened when Barnes was making solids. BATF stopped them making smaller sizes. They make .375 and up, that is okay. I have a box of Barnes in 6mm/75gr solids. They are very fur friendly. But as I said BATF stop Barnes from making them.

You can still get small solids. Look at gscustom.com.

Steel, or tungsten alloy and larger projectiles; depleted uranium

I have some ap slugs loaded for my 300 Win Mag and they would put a world of hurt on you behind a 3/4" steel plate at 100 yards.
