Converting a rifle length stock to a CAR. Did I screw up?

Ok, so I thought I would change out my long A2 stock on my 24 inch Bushmaster to a shorter CAR collapsable stock because the gun is so long.

I did not even think about the spring and buffer are different, as I found out when I tried to cycle the charging handle, (the bolt will not move back more than an inch) I now understand this is for safety and the tube length so the bolt carrier group does do break apart or something like that, especially when you try to shoot a CAR buffer and spring in a rifle length tube.

I read that rifle length buffer and springs shoot smoother and handle a wider range of loads. Is this true? Am I giving up performance with the shorter CAR stock?

Use an appropriate carbine spring and buffer in your carbine stock and you will be fine. 223 recoil isn't really an issue, but you can try a heavy buffer if you feel the need.

I still have two 5.56 rifles (both with 16" barrels), one with the standard A2 and the other with the Carbine collapsible stock...Maybe it's just me, but I can't tell any difference in function or feel with a wide variety of ammunition..The collapsible stock just makes it easier to adjust for different weights of clothing..

As long as you use the proper parts in your change over, you will be fine...

I'm sure you will find the carbine spring is stiffer than a rifle length spring. Don't know about the weight difference in the 2 buffers types. I doubt you will feel any difference in recoil between the 2.

A lot of guys have told me that you can have cycling issues using a 20" Barrel / Rifle Length Gas System with a Carbine Buffer and Spring.

I have not found that to be the case so far in the two 20" Barreled Uppers with Rifle Length Gas Systems that I have converted to Carbine Buffers and Springs.

Currently the only AR I have is a DPMS Oracle (16" Barrel with Carbine Length Gas System) with the 6 Position Collapsible Buttstock with Carbine Buffer and Spring. I am thinking of building a 20" 6.5 Grendel Upper Receiver Assembly. Hopefully the 6.5 Grendel Rifle Length Gas System will work with the Carbine Buffer and Spring.

Anyone done something like this before?

Larry

Thanks

Right now cash is really tight around here due to health issues for both the wife and I. I am going to try to buy a piece at a time so I can get a 6.5 Grendel put together over the course of the next year or so.
