Whats bait do you guys recomend for coon useing cage traps
this time of year? Ive been useing peanut butter marshmellows
and pancake syrup, trying to avoid skunks which is working. ive only caught one coon, but ive caught 9 greys. And I
know theres alot of coons beacause ive averaged three a night
with my hounds. Or do you think it might be the set? I havent
been real particular.

thanks

I used sardines to trap feral cats out of our bout/rv storage sheds, and caught about equal numbers of skunks as cats, and maybe 1/2 as many coons.

To keep skunks from spraying, I covered the live traps completely with burlap except for the door. Never had a problem.

Thanks nmleon. I hate to admit it but that never crossed my mind. Ive walked up to the trap after the fact holding a white sheet in front of me and draped the sheet over the trap. It works if the trap is in the open but kinda nerve
racking. But im trapping down in the berry vines now and
its impossible to do.

i have always trapped raccoons in live traps by using peanut butter with marshmallows, sometimes i would grab a can of tuna fish and stab holes in it and dump the fish oil all around leading up into the cage. i would then thrown the can in the back of the cage. used the same can for like 2 months because they couldnt get to the meat.

When you set for coons gang set heavy. I mean heavy like half dozen traps in a 10 foot area. What I have read and noticed over the past is if you got like 4 or 5 coons comming in at once and you only have 1 or 2 traps set and catch one or two coon. You wont see them other coons again for a week. Why is that,I dont know. But I am sure many others have had this happen also. They find lots of signs and or have cam pics of groups of coons and set 1 or 2 traps and catch 2 of the say 8 coons. They wont be back for a week+. I have seen this many of times over. That why I gang set heavy now for coon. I wan't them all right now and not have to wait a week to catch a single or double after the first catch. Catch them and get out of there and gang set some place new.

I had a good recipe awhile back.I think it was one can of jack mackeral, one TBS liquid smoke, and two TBS molassas.I never caught a skunk with it,but it probably would be somewhat attractive to them.
