Quote:And then theres the pronounciation of coyote. some say Ky-O-Tee, which is the proper way, but I say Ky-Yote.

Not that I post here very often anymore, but just happened to be here seeking a specific thread when I came across this.

Says who?

The Webster's I have on my desk gives three different vernacular pronunciations for Canis latrans, and two of them are pronounced as ki-yot, or derivatives thereof. Admittedly, it does include ki-yo-tee as well, but that pronouncement is outnumbered. If we want to refer to this animal by its real name, we should go to its root and origins, the N ahuatl term, "coyotl", which I occasionally use and which almost always draws strange looks.

Personally, when I hear someone use the word "ki-yo-tee", I am immediately left to deduce that this person is an urbanite, has no personal connection with ki-yotes, or just doesn't know how to pronounce the term. This is because, over the course of my life, I have known countless thousands of coyote hunters and researchers and have never, ever heard anyone who I felt knew what they were talking about in all things coyote pronounce it ki-yo-tee. Thus, I make it a practice to correct this indiscretion when it is uttered. One guy at a time, I'm saving the world.
