I always thought that a magazine (as relates to firearms) was the container the held the ammunition and was necessary for firing the weapon, whereas a "Clip" was the container that held the ammunition but was discarded after the ammunition was loaded in the weapon...as in the M1 Garand,,,similar to a speed loader for a revolver...or a 'stripper clip' for an AR...
